Documenting, Preserving and Sharing the History of Quilts and Quiltmakers.
eBurst from the AAQ July 6, 2011

Summer is officially in full swing here in Asheville--the fireworks have come and gone, the bears have started roaming (yes, a beautiful teenage black bear passed through my yard yesterday!) and before you know it we'll be turning the calendar (or iCalendar) to August. If your lucky enough to live close to New York City then please don't miss the chance to join us for the greatest quilt party of the summer! And a great opportunity to meet and join the Alliance for American Quilts, an organization committed to putting an end to anonymity in quilt history. Come and enjoy the Big Apple, these great events and celebrate the spirit and the work of quilters like you.

Need more motivation?  Click here to tune in to Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski (AAQ board member) live today at 3:00 pm Eastern. Mark's co-host will be Meg Cox (AAQ President) and Marianne Fons will join Mark and Meg to tell you more about Quilters Take Manhattan. You really can't beat a personal invitation from this group!

Quilters Take Manhattan

The Modern Stories event on Friday, August 5 in Victoria Findlay Wolfe's loft is sold out as expected, but there are still tickets to both the Marianne & Jay on the Runway event as well as the cocktail party at The City Quilter. And to make it even easier to treat yourself to these events we're offering all tickets at member prices--$45 for Marianne & Jay and $100 for The City Quilter (after July 31 ticket prices go up, so don't delay).
Marianne and Jay on the Runway logoYou won't want to miss quilting legend Marianne Fon's lecture "Why We Quilt" and a chance to meet Marianne's effervescent daughter Mary (star of the new Quilty series) and see firsthand how our Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories oral history project works as we interview Jay McCarroll, Project Runway's Season One winner.

We'll settle in to hear from these incredible quilt stars at the hippest nonprofit venue in Manhattan--the Fashion Institute of Technology in the heart of the Fashion District. We have an incredible list of door prizes including those adorable AccuQuilt Go! Baby's and extravagant goody bags.

The City Quilter storefront photoAnd if you'd like a chance to mix and mingle with Marianne, Mary, Jay and the hardworking members of the AAQ board, including Meg Cox, Quilt Out Loud's Jodie Davis and Mark Lipinski, Moda's Mark Dunn and many more quilt artists, authors, industry leaders and up and comers, then join us that same evening for NY's Ultimate Block Party: Cocktails at The City Quilter. After the F.I.T. event we'll take a short walk to The City Quilter, Manhattan's biggest and best quilt shop (and a generous supporter of the AAQ!). We'll close the Noriko Endo exhibition, enjoy wine and light fare and premiere quilts made by AAQ board members in a special silent auction.

Visit our website for full details and ticket sales for these events.
Tickets are sold a la carte, so you can tailor a program to your own tastes and budget. Thanks to our generous sponsors, listed below, we're able to offer tickets at very affordable prices.

QTM guild trip bannerAnd because we believe our events this August make for the perfect road trip for guilds and bees we've also made a special offer for guilds: purchase 10 tickets to Marianne & Jay on the Runway and we'll give you 1 free ticket. You can make a group reservation by phoning us at (828) 251-7073 or reserve your tickets individually online and be sure everyone in your guild who buys a ticket enters your guild's name when you register.

As an extra incentive to guilds we'll be giving out two special prizes---one to the guild who brings the most members to our Marianne & Jay on the Runway event on August 6 at the Fashion Institute of Technology and one to the group (5 members or more) who comes from the farthest away to attend this event. Both winning guilds will receive a full-day program/visit for their guild by a board member of the Alliance for American Quilts (an all-star dynamic group who believe in the importance of documenting quilts and their makers, including quilt media stars Meg Cox, Mark Lipinski, Jodie Davis and diverse and committed group of quiltmakers, industry leaders, archivists, writers, curators and historians. Not only that, we'll throw in a terrific door prize for your guild, which will arrive with your special guest presenter.
