Documenting, Preserving and Sharing the Stories of Quilts and Quiltmakers
| |
News from The Alliance Volume 40, April 7, 2010
|
Dear Alliance Members & Supporters, Happy Spring to all! We have a lot to share so I'll hop right to it.
Connected by Threads in Washington, D.C.
Last month just as the first optimistic crocuses were starting to push through the soil in Washington, DC, we held three exciting events that helped raise over $15,000 for the AAQ operating fund. Not only was this a fundraising success, but events like this remind us of why we do what we do. A gathering of quiltmakers and people who care about quilts conducts a certain electricity that is irresistible. In the photo at right,
Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi speaks
about "Modesty," a quilt by Jim Smoote. (In the background is a framed
quilt by the late Viola Canady depicting the historic Charles Sumner
School, our venue for this lecture). I was intrigued,
educated and inspired by Dr. Mazloomi, Le Rowell and the DC artists who presented their work. It reminded me that documenting the stories of quiltmakers and their work is how we preserve and share this electricity for all! We want to thank Lisa Ellis of the Sacred Threads Exhibit and maker
of Art
Call, the on-line artist registration, jurying and exhibit
administration system. www.ellisquilts.com;
and the Rowell Family
Charities for sponsoring our Connected by Threads events. Thanks also to
all those who attended, volunteered, donated items to our silent auction, and contributed their talent and their time by making
presentations at our events. You are an important part of this alliance and we appreciate your efforts and support so much. Above: Le Rowell
sharing "The Liberation Quilt" created in Luxembourg to express
gratitude to the Americans for freeing them in World War II. Designed by
Florence Thilgen in 1994, 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
At right: Maria
Goodwin, member of the Daughters of Dorcas and Sons quilt guild, who
presented her work at our Meet the Artists event, explains how
she collects patterns found in ancient artifacts and uses them
as inspiration to create her own quilting
templates. In the background is Donnette A. Cooper's quilt, "American at
the Crossroads" (Donnette A.
Cooper©
2008).
At left: Lisa
Ellis, another Meet the Artists presenter shows her quilt called "Global Balance" which she designed by
taking a line drawing of a drunkard's path pattern and tranformed it with the "spherize" filter within
Photoshop.

New from Old--Still 55 Days To Get Your Entry In!
|
|

There's still plenty of time left to get your "New from Old" contest entry finished and on it's way to our office in Asheville. The theme this year couldn't be more open-ended and the grand prize couldn't be more exciting: a Handi
Quilter HQ Sixteen Quilting Machine. See the full guidelines, prizes and downloadable entry form on our website.
Pay a cyber visit to some of our friends who plan to enteror have already sent their entry in: Allie Aller (Allie's entry is just in --see the photo below ) Mark Lipinski (Mark has a great starter idea--go to an antique store!) Michele Foster (hint: start with EQ6) Barbara Curiel (gorgeous embroidery and embellishment) Amy Munson (maker of last year's stunning "Crazy for Beads" shown below) Gerry Kreuger (this quilt connects the story of Gerri's grandmother and grandaughter)
Early Bird
Opportunity: One of our generous
"New from Old" sponsors, The Quilt Show.com has offered to run a slide
show of some of the entries we receive by April 30th. If we receive your
quilt by this date your entry may be included in this slide show.
At left, an early bird entry by Allie Aller: "Granddaughters' Flower Garden." This stunner is a collaboration with Allie's cousin Tracy, who provided the painting in the center, a remembrance of their grandmother's home--the site of weekly family gatherings during their childhood. Don't worry; Allie is an AAQ board member, so she's not eligible for prizes this time around. :)
Check out the AAQ YouTube Channel to see a video featuring our first 4 entries.
Another side benefit of entering AAQ quilt contests is publicity! Twelve of the 2009 "Crazy for Quilts" contest entrants (some were CFQ winners, but not all) were published
in the April/May 2010 issue of Quilters Newsletter. Look for Quilters
Newsletter in quilt shops, bookstores, and major retailers, or visit www.shopquiltersvillage.com to
subscribe or to purchase single copies.
Featured 2009 "Crazy for Quilts" entrants (clockwise from top): Mary Vesta Pumphrey, Janneke VanDerRee and Amy Munson.
