NEW LEADERSHIP FOR NONPROFIT ALLIANCE FOR AMERICAN QUILTS
|
Asheville, N.C., September 3, 2009 - The nonprofit
Alliance for American Quilts announced new board members and leadership,
following a meeting in Lincoln, Nebraska earlier this month and a meeting
in March in Asheville, North Carolina.
The new president is Meg Cox, a prominent author and
quiltmaker who most recently served the board as vice president. A respected
journalist and former reporter for the Wall Street Journal, Ms. Cox is the
author of three books, including The Quilter's Catalog: A Comprehensive
Resource Guide, named one of the best how-to books of 2008 by Library
Journal. She has been on the board of the AAQ since 2006 and lives with
her family in Princeton, N.J. The photo below
shows Meg Cox (left) at the board meeting held at the International Quilt Study
Center, with Amy Milne (right), who continues as executive director of the AAQ, working
from its Asheville, N.C. office.
The Alliance announced
that two board members will take on the duties of vice president: Mark Dunn, president and owner of United
Notions/Moda Fabrics in Dallas, Texas; and Mary Evelynn Sorrell, a museum curator and
educator who worked most recently for the Center for American History, University of Texas, with responsibility for the
Winedale Quilt Collection.
The diversity of backgrounds among the new leadership
is a trademark of the organization, whose mission is to document, preserve and
share the stories of quilts and their makers. Since it was founded in 1993, the
Alliance for
American Quilts has brought together people from every aspect of quilting. The
AAQ celebrates and showcases the contributions of quiltmakers, scholars,
curators, collectors and the commercial side of quilting throughout the rich
history of this craft, and into the present.
Continuing as secretary is Janneken
Smucker, a PhD Candidate at the University of Delaware.
Katherine Burger Johnson, an archivist for manuscript collections at the University of Louisville remains treasurer.
At the Lincoln meeting,
four new board members joined the Alliance, and
another was welcomed back after a break, Amy H. Henderson, a quilt scholar and
curator who recently earned a PhD in Art History from the University of Delaware.
The four new board members beginning their service in
Lincoln:
Mark Hyland, president and CEO of Handi Quilter, a leader in the manufacturing
of mid-arm and long-arm quilting machines, North Salt Lake, Utah;
Carolyn L. Mazloomi, an influential quilt historian, curator and author who
founded the Women of Color Quilters Network, West Chester, Ohio;
Marin F. Hanson, curator of exhibitions at the International Quilt Study
Center, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and
Luke Haynes, an up and coming young art quilter; San Francisco,
California.
At the March 2009 board meeting
in Asheville
four new board members were welcomed:
Allison Ann Aller, professional crazy quilter, teacher and
writer, author of the Allies in Stitches blog and staff member of CQMagOnline, Washougal, Washington;
Jodie Davis, president of QNNtv, host of several quilting
shows including the new Quilt Out Loud with Mark Lipinski and author of over 30
books, Canton, Georgia;

Antonio, Shavano Park,
Texas; and Michele Muska, Marketing Communications and Exhibits Coordinator for EZ Quilting/Simplicity Creative Group and creator of Lola Rae Designs (one of a kind purses, stained
glass, fiber jewelry and art quilts), Enfield, Connecticut. The new leadership at the Alliance for American Quilts looks forward to
an exciting year that will include expansion of its projects. Among other
things, the AAQ will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its unique oral history
project, Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories. Visit our website to read full biographies for our board members. For further information about the new leadership or
