ALLIANCE POSTS CRAZY CONTEST QUILTS & AUCTION DATES
|
ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA -August 10, 2009 - The nonprofit Alliance for
American Quilts has posted quilts entered in its Crazy For Quilts contest on a
gallery at its website. Take a look at these 84 stunning quilts, all 16 inches
square, which will be auctioned off on eBay starting October 26. There
are many outstanding quilts on view, including a whimsical creation by renowned
Canadian quilt artist Pam Allen called "One Crazy Hot Mama" (pictured at right). A quilt by Pam
called "Icon - Domestic Goddess" fetched the highest price during the 2007
auction of Alliance house-shaped contest quilts: it was bought by a collector in
the U.K. for more than $1,500. Like many of the quiltmakers who entered quilts
in this year's contest, Pam Allen added her own unique spin to the usual conventions of 19th-century crazy
quilting.
Also notable among this year's contest quilts are three quilts by
celebrated art quilter Yvonne Porcella, and an exquisite piece by accomplished
crazy quilter Betty Pillsbury. Betty won first place in Embroidered Quilts
during the recent American Quilter's Society show in Knoxville, Tenn., and her
gorgeous Alliance contest quilt "Rose Song" (pictured below left) will surely attract heavy bidding in
the upcoming eBay auction. The wide range of crazy quilts
entered in the contest includes two quilts by up-and-coming art quilter Luke
Haynes. One features soul singer James Brown and his famous quote, "I don't know karate...but I know crazy" (pictured below right). The 84 contest quilts
represent quiltmakers from 29 states and four foreign countries, including
Japan. Visit the AAQ website to see all the quilts. The
contest quilts will also be exhibited in several more venues, including the
Virginia Quilt Museum, from August 17 through September 11 and the International Quilt Festival from October 15 through 18 in Houston, Texas. Members of the Alliance for American
Quilts will vote this week for the winners of this year's contest. Prizes were
provided by generous contest sponsors Moda Fabrics, Mountain Mist, The Electric Quilt Company, EZ Quilter/Simplicity Creative Group, Spoonflower, Quilting Arts TV, Dharma Trading Co., Embellishment Village, Kreinik and Riversilks.
The AAQ contest quilts will be auctioned on eBay in three groups, for one week
each, starting on a Monday each time. The dates are October 26 to November 1;
November 2 to November 8; and November 9 to 15. Everyone is welcome to bid, and
the bidding price for each quilt starts at just $50. In previous auctions, the
bulk of the quilts sold for $75 or less, so this quilt auction is a great venue
for picking up holiday gifts. This is the third annual quilt contest run
by the Alliance, with all the proceeds going toward the mission of documenting,
preserving and sharing the stories of quilts and their makers. The core projects
of the AAQ include the Quilt Index, run in partnership with Michigan State
University, and as part of its work to share and save quilts, all Alliance
contest quilts will be documented on the Quilt Index, along with the artist
statements by each quiltmaker. A new contest will be announced shortly on
the Alliance homepage, http://www.AllianceforAmericanQuilts.org.
