The Legacy of Timbuktu Exhibit Opens January 23
camelsMake plans to visit the library between January 23 and January 29 to view our newest exhibit, "The Legacy of Timbuktu: Wonders of the Written Word".  For one week only, the Cameron Village Regional Library, in collaboration with Cultural Enrichment Services, Inc., is pleased to host this traveling exhibit from the International Museum of Muslim Cultures in Jackson, Mississippi.

The exhibit highlights Timbuktu as a sophisticated, literate city that flourished on the edge of the Sahara beginning in the 13th century and lasting more than 700 years. Discover how Timbuktu
was a thriving crossroads of international caravan commerce, including the book trade. Find out how Timbuktu became a celebrated center of learning, attracting scholars and thousands of students and teachers from many countries and backgrounds.

This exhibit is a World Heritage Series Event of The International Museum of Muslim Cultures in partnership with the Mamma Haidara Memorial Library of Timbuktu. It is hosted by Cultural Enrichment Services, Inc. in partnership with UNC African Studies Center, Cameron Village Regional Library, and the North Carolina Museum of History. It is sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council. Official Sponsors: Jackson State University & Tougaloo College.

Another Year Older...
It's amazing that the "new and improved" Cameron Village Regional Library is getting ready to celebrate its 4th year in the renovated facility.  So many things have evolved since our major renovation/building project. Thank you for weathering the storms of construction, a temporary library, staff turnover, shared collections, budget reductions, and the changing face of life in our urban library. To recap:

*January 20, 2006 marked the opening day of our new facility.  Since that time, the building has won 3 design awards (City of Raleigh, Triangle area, and an honorable mention from the N.C. Chapter of the American Institute of Architects) and our library was the first "color" photograph to grace the annual edition of NC Libraries magazine.  We opened with a grand parade through the shopping center and hoards of customers enchanted by the new space.  We have been "on go" ever since.

*Our local circulation of books has increased from about 65,000 items per month to about 94,000 items per month.  Our number of daily visits by customers has increased from approximately 2800 people to over 4000 visits almost every day.  Our computer use and program attendance continues to rise.  Monthly, we feature art by local artists, and local musicians play for a few hours each week.  We continue to provide wifi access for laptop computers.  We have hosted seven traveling exhibits about various people and topics. We feature art by local school classes on a rotating and permanent basis.

*Locally, we increased our security presence as some problems of being in an urban setting became obvious to us this year.  We gladly open our doors to every resident for library service, but we were forced to address the behaviors of a few that were negatively affecting the experience of many.

*From a system perspective over the past four years, we moved from local book selection and an individual branch book collection to centralized selection and "sharing" a system collection with the other 19 library facilities in the county.  We continue to analyze and evaluate the books we purchase, the interest that spawns that selection, and the use of our collections in an ongoing fashion.  This fiscal year the system will see over 10 million visitors who will check out over 12 million books.  That is to say, our collection of 1.3 million volumes will turn over 12 times during the course of the year. Incredible by anyone's measurement!

*Our Director of 27 years, Tom Moore, retired in June.  We are in the midst of the search for a new Library Director while being led by Interim Director Ann Burlingame.

*We faced the tough economic times head-on last year by a reduction of hours (and a reduction of staff) and a large reduction in our system book budget.  It remains difficult, even after six months, to turn customers away early on Friday morning or at 6:00 that same evening. Cuts to our book and materials budget seem obvious to us and to our regular readers and significant changes will be felt in January with magazine and newspaper reductions.  We appreciate the loyalty of our library customers during these difficult times and remain confident that better times are ahead in a few years.

So, it's been an exciting and constantly evolving four years.  As I stated on opening day, I still believe "it's the best place in the galaxy" to be offering library service. This is due in no small part to the value placed on libraries by our funding authorities and by our community. Thank you all for your constant support of books, reading and libraries in Wake County. Here's to continued growth and evolution!
