November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and National Family Caregivers Month. In the United States alone, there are nearly 15 million Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers. Join us in honoring them for the billions of hours of care they provide each year.

Families should talk openly about driving and Alzheimer's disease
Driving demands quick reaction time and fast decision making - because of this, a person with Alzheimer's will eventually become unable to drive. Making decisions about when it's time to stop driving can be difficult, but dealing with the issue early on can help ease the transition. New Alzheimer's drug shows promise in clinical trial

In a small, preliminary study, an experimental drug called gantenerumab lowered levels of amyloid plaque in the brains of 12 people with Alzheimer's disease. Experts caution that much more research is needed before gantenerumab can be deemed safe or effective for Alzheimer's; Phase 2 clinical trials of the drug are underway. Though amyloid buildup in the brain is considered an important factor in the progression of Alzheimer's, it is still to be determined whether lowering or eliminating amyloid will result in memory and thinking benefits.

Connect with others
An Alzheimer's Association Support Group is a safe place to learn, offer and receive helpful tips, and meet others coping with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia. Alzheimer's Association Support Groups are facilitated by trained professionals and community members.

The Association has many support groups, at various times and locations, including three new groups in the Twin Cities metro. Check to see if there is a group close to you that fits your needs.
