New Clark County ReStore
Opening in February! |
After months of planning and negotiation, we are excited to announce that the Portland/Vancouver HFH Affiliates have finally signed the lease for a new ReStore in the 4th Plain redevelopment corridor, in Vancouver, Washington.
We will be sharing the new space at 5000 4th Plain, with CREAM (Computer Reuse and Marketing). This fulfills our vision to create an EcoPark in the Vancouver area, conserving precious natural resources and keeping both usable computers and building materials out of the local landfill.
Mark Haley, a longtime HFH construction site supervisor, will be the manager of the new ReStore (see accompanying interview with Mark).
We still need additional funds to cover startup costs and initial operating expenses. We are seeking both cash and such equipment donations as trucks, forklifts, carts, shelving and racks. Please consider contributing at one of the following levels:
Gold Pallet: Greater than $15,000
Silver Pallet: $5,000 - $15,000
Bronze Pallet: $1,000 - $5,000

Mark Haley,
New ReStore Manager |
Longtime Portland HFH construction site supervisor Mark Haley will be the manager of the new Vancouver ReStore. "This is a new venture for me," he acknowledges. "Starting a retail store from the ground up is exciting, and it will really help the HFH affiliate in Vancouver. Plus, I graduated from high school in Clark County, in Longview, and I like the idea of helping my hometown." Mark has been a local Habitat site manager for 6 years. Before that he worked with another non-profit for 4 years, and prior to that he spent 8 years in construction, "doing a little of everything," including having his own framing business. Mark has been building houses for so long that it's no longer about the actual building for him, but rather the helping families and working with volunteers that he especially enjoys. "I love running projects, and a ReStore still has that being out in the field feel to it."

Challenge 2030 is a Call to all in the Building Community
|
Architecture 2030 is an independent, non-partisan organization that is dedicated to transforming the global Building Sector from a major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions into a key part of the solution to the developing crisis of climate change. Currently buildings are the major source of demand for energy and materials that produce greenhouse gases.
Founded by distinguished architect Edward Masria in 2002, Architecture 2030 has issued a Challenge to the global architecture and building community to adopt the following targets in order to keep global warming under 1 degree Centigrade above today's level:
· All new building projects will be designed to achieve an energy consumption performance standard of 50% of the regional or national average for that building type.
· At a minimum, an equal amount of existing building area will be renovated annually to meet an energy consumption standard of 50% of the regional or national average for that building type.
· Fossil fuel reduction standard for all new buildings will be increased to: 60% by 2010 70% by 2015 80% by 2020 90% by 2025 · Carbon neutral by 2030 (using no fossil fuel, greenhouse gas emitting energy to operate). Ways to accomplish this:
· Innovative sustainable design strategies · Generating on-site renewable power ·purchasing up to 20% renewable energy or credits
