Meet Malia, Our New Volunteer Coordinator |
Malia Tam Sing
Malia is new to the ReStore, but she is not new to Habitat for Humanity. She comes to us after two years as the Mt. Hood affiliate's volunteer coordinator as an AmeriCorp member (before the Mt. Hood chapter merged with Portland earlier this year). Before that she spent six months as a construction site volunteer. Malia was recruited by former Mt. Hood HFH Board President John Mahaffey. They met at the checkout counter at Safeway. After nine years working there, she was "tired of the daily grind, and looking for something new."
"I thoroughly enjoyed my two years at Mt. Hood," she shares. "I loved getting to know new volunteers and finding out why they were there."
Malia was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. She moved to Portland when she was eight years old. She is the second of nine children, although the oldest of the 5 brothers and 2 sisters that she grew up with. Her name is Hawaiian for Mary. She lives with one of her brothers, his girlfriend, and her new 4-month-old nephew. She helps with childcare in exchange for room and board, a sweet deal considering how much she enjoys spending time with her nephew.
Many of Malia's favorite activities involve the outdoors. She enjoys bicycling, camping, and working in the yard. She just started snowboarding last year, and has a season pass that she's looking forward to using this winter. She is also a voracious reader.
The ReStore is a new environment for Malia. "I'm enjoying learning about it--a good challenge. We have a good group of core volunteers. It's important that we find even more."
Welcome, Malia.

Message from the ReStore Director |
My hope in this edition was to announce the signing of a lease for our new ReStore in Clark County. Alas, we have not signed yet, but we hope to very, very soon; and you will certainly all hear of it. If all goes well we should be able to open this winter!
Here in Portland my hope is that you are all enjoying the changes at our store. For those of you who haven't been around for a while I think you would be surprised and hopefully impressed. Among the most significant changes are the new faces; I think Eben, Malia, and now Jeff each bring a new energy and talent and skill set to our store. I am thrilled with the hiring of each of them and I know that we have great times coming our way.
Above you have read about Malia, last month we featured Eben, next month we will introduce our newest staff members; Jeff Labanara, and Cindy Correll. Jeff has been with Habitat as a construction Americorp volunteer for the last two years, and is joining us as our new Warehouse Assistant. He is already proving to be efficient, friendly, and organized. He also brings a wonderful connection to the work of the Habitat construction side that we all support through the ReStore; its great to have that experience in the store. Cindy has been part of our Development Committee for the last year and a half; she has helped build our business plan and has assisted in our grantwriting. She has joined us full time for the next year as a Vista Volunteer. Her official title is "ReStore Development Coordinator" and she will be helping us organize our systems and build the infrastructure to continue our expected growth. We are truly fortunate to have these four extremely capable and competent people join our team.
The last two years have been a time of transition and planning. This year is the time for action. Our new business plan calls for the opening of a second store, a new website, and the creation of a Comprehensive Marketing Plan; we have all the pieces in place and are eagerly awaiting the start of the new year. As we go into the holidays we will gather our energies and our focus, come the new year we will be reaching out in new and very exciting ways, and trying to include as many of you as possible in the process.
Thank you all for your support of our ReStore and Habitat for Humanity, for whatever you are able to give, and for your shopping with us. I hope that you all enjoy the changes we have made these last few months and that you enjoy growing with us this next year as well. And we all here at the ReStore hope you have a great Thanksgiving Holiday.

PCC Students4Giving On-Line Auction
|
PCC Students4Giving is an
academic program that directly benefits local nonprofits.
Students4Giving gives students real-life experiences by having them
guide an actual philanthropic fund. In 2008, Students4Giving granted
$10,000 to four Portland-Metro nonprofit organizations and $9,900 to
eleven community youth projects. Beginning December 1, 2008, and
running through December 14, 2008, PCC Students4Giving will learn
philanthropy by auctioning off a number of fun and unique items to
raise money for local charities. The group is looking for auction items
and holding a $250 prize for the person who can refer the most friends to the auction! This is also a great advertising opportunity for
business donors. Businesses will have their logos and website links
prominently displayed, along with their donated items, to the 80,000
students and other members of the PCC community. How people can help: 1. Help us find interesting and diverse auction items 2. Become a sponsor for the auction 3. Spread the word to your friends and associates 4.
Sign up to participate in the auction fun! Every dollar earned by this
auction will be given back to the Portland-Metro community. It will
also directly educate college students and help local businesses
advertise their services and products. Every donation triples in value! To join the fun, please visit our auction website at: pccstudents4giving or contact Cynthia Killingsworth at 503-977-8070 or cynthia.killingsworth@pcc.edu.

Dear ReStore Volunteers |
I would like to take this time to say thank you to all of you that have made my arrival and this past month at the store a pleasant and exciting experience. I look forward to getting to know you all better. Right now, I am very excited to announce that next month we will begin using a new web-based volunteer scheduling system called VolunteerUP. This system will make it easier for volunteers to sign-up, while keeping track of their hours and allowing us to send out email blasts to volunteers when extra help is needed. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Thank you for your dedication to the ReStore, I look forward to making your volunteer experiences' great! Sincerely, Malia Tam Sing Volunteer Coordinator |
Architecture 2030 Challenge
|
In response to the the climate change crisis facing the world, Architecture 2030, a New Mexico-based non-profit, has issued a Global Challenge to all those in the building trades. Its mission is to transform the way buildings, developments, and renovations are planned, designed, and constructed in order to accomplish dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, the Challenge has set an emission reduction goal of 50% for new buildings and renovations by 2010, then carbon neutrality by 2030.
Among those who have signed on are the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the American Institute of Architects, the U.S. Green Building Council, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada, and many others.
Architecture 2030 was started in 2002 by internationally recognized architect Edward Mazria. During his 30 year career he has employed an innovative environmental approach to his designs. He also wrote The Passive Solar Energy Book, as well as many articles on climate change.
Coming soon is the organization's comprehensive energy plan, 2030 Blueprint, a comprehensive energy plan that will focus on better energy efficiency in buildings, homeowner choices, and renewable energy. According to the group's Website, this new plan, if implemented, would replace 100% of fossil-fuel generated electricity, reduce imported oil by as much as 89%, and supply 37% of total energy consumption. |
