News from the Portland ReStore's Director
This is the season where all the non-profits line up to do the big ask [and fear not, I will get to that] but first I wanted to take some time to recount just how blessed we are as an organization, and to thank everyone again for all the giving throughout the year.   We are, first and foremost, extremely blessed with a wonderful crew of donors, volunteers, staff, and supporters that make our work so much more than about selling stuff.

Few see the tireless work of our staff down at our ReStore, especially this time of year with no heat.  It is wonderful to see how much we have grown as a staff over the last year.  We have had some turnover but its all been for the best, and I don't think we have ever seen a ReStore staff as committed and team oriented as we have at this moment.  Their work is what makes all the various parts function as a whole.  They do a tremendous job and deserve the thanks of everyone who cares about Habitat and re-use here in our metro area.

We also have about the most unsung group of heroes around in our group of regular volunteers.  We don't have many, and need more, but if the staff is the backbone these folks are the blood.  We would come crashing to a fast halt without them.  These folks drive our truck, run the register, keep the office organized, and help keep us on track out on the floor.  Thanks are not enough for all their dedication and hard work.

Our donors include both household donors and business donors.  We thank you all.  The work of the ReStore in supporting Habitats mission would literally be impossible without these donations.  The commitment of countless homeowners and businesses in partnering with us to reduce the waste of materials and to help build Habitat Homes is truly amazing.  It is not always the path of least resistance to donate un-wanted materials, there are sometimes easier ways, but Portland is full of folks who care about doing the right thing even when its not convenient.  Businesses in particular have really stepped up to the plate this year and my fondest wish for next year is to put together a program for acknowledging these businesses as leaders within our community for their support.

Many of you are also our best supporters by shopping at our store.  This of course completes the circle; every shopper is actively involved in the building of Habitat Homes.  Swinging a hammer on site is the most direct way to build a house of course, but every dollars spent at our store is another shingle up, or wall raised, or roof on.

As its more blessed to give than to receive I feel the need to emphasis what we have given back to our community.  Together as staff, donors, volunteers, and shoppers we have kept hundreds of tons of materials out of the landfill, we have found new homes for great materials and so conserved precious resources by not wasting what is already manufactured, and we have raised thousands of dollars to help build homes with families in need.  What a blessing, and how fortunate we are for the opportunity to give back to our community in these ways.

However, it is the nature of our beast to receive, that makes it all go around.  So here's the ask; we need more, more donations, more volunteers, more sponsors and more shoppers.  So spread the word, become involved!  If you are a business donor, call us about helping to contact other businesses you know.  If you are a shopper tell others about what a great store we have.  If you are a volunteer, bring in a friend, talk to your employer, church, school, about groups volunteering.  The ReStore is having a great year and we need more of everything to keep it going stronger than ever.

Thanks again to all!  May you all have a wonderful holiday season.

'Tis the Season to Volunteer

The work of one can serve as the work of many!

ReStore needs help with our website.  If enough information is available on our website, our office work could be greatly relieved from answering repeated questions.  It also serves as an informative advertisement of our ever changing stock and sales.  So please bring your skills and be our customer service/spokes person/webmaster.

In Need of extra warehouse help over the Holidays

With double to triple the amount of donations coming in for the end of the year tax write-offs we can always use help keeping the store in order and bringing in the new year with a warehouse full of stock. Open every regular day, except Christmas and New Years day.

We also always need help out in the store from groups.  Let us know if your workplace, church or school has programs for volunteering that we could invite to join us!

Email our Volunteer Coordinator Molly at molly@pdxrestore.org for more information or to sign up!

Please Contribute to the Willamette Week's
              4th Annual GIVE! Guide.

For the past four years, Willamette Week, Portland's pop culture weekly newspaper, has encouraged its readers to show their holiday spirit by donating to suggested local non profits.  In 2006, 1400 generous people gave more than $220,000 through the paper's Give! Guide Website, and another $3,800 in checks.  Habitat for Humanity received the largest amount, $24,321.96 (including matching grants).  This year the paper is recommending 49 groups that "do Portland all manner of good."  We hope that, in 2007, even more will be raised for these important causes in need.  The Give! Guide Website is ready to accept donations.
        Spotlight on Classique Floors
Classique Floors, a woman-owned Portland business, has been a Sponsor of the local Habitat for Humanity for the past seven years.  Many ties bind us.  Judith Huck, Classique Floors' owner, is the incoming President of the Board of the Mt. Hood Habitat for Humanity.  Her company's logo is on the back of our big ReStore truck.  Classique regularly donates materials and installers to home-building sites, and contributes surplus flooring to the ReStore.

Classique Floors opened its doors in 1977.  The company specializes in the custom installation of a wide variety of floor coverings, including both popular, traditional products as well as more unique, "green" floorings such as marmoleum and cork.  "We love green products," emphasizes Ms. Huck.  "We find recycled materials to offer customers whenever possible."  After removing old carpeting at a job, they always donate it to Environmentally Conscious Recycling (formerly the East County Recycling Center) in Northeast Portland.

In the Spring and Fall, Classique offers free informational and installation-oriented Saturday seminars.  The company's showroom is at 14127 SE Stark, and is open seven days a week.  For more information, visit Classique Floors website.

Thank you Classique Floors for all that you do to support Habitat for Humanity!
A Unique Local Tool Resource

We recently learned about a unique source for obtaining tools, other than going out and buying new ones.  In the spirit of Reusing and Recycling, the North Portland Tool Library is a
 good alternative.

The North Portland Tool Library began in October, 2004, a project of North Portland Community Works.  Its primary objective is to build community and livability in a very diverse part of the city.  The Tool Library has more than 500 tools in stock, including gardening, carpentry, plumbing and electrical tools, both hand and power tools.  There is a downloadable (in PDF format) list of the tools they carry on their Website.  Tools are available on a first come, first served basis.  Tool borrowers need to be members (membership is free) and residents of North Portland.  The Library is hoping to expand to other parts of Portland in the future.  For more information, visit the Tool Library's Website, or call them at 503-823-0209.  Hours are Tuesday, 5pm - 7:30pm and Saturday 9am - 2pm.
