News from the Portland Metro Area ReStore
|
I have been saying for the past two years now that one of the greatest keys to our success will be to get the ReStore organized and rolling in the right direction so that we can better utilize volunteers. As that happens, we will take off. Probably the best example of our success in this direction so far this year has been in building a core of volunteers at the register up front. Adding this group to our volunteer truck team has been a wonderful addition to our ReStore and is allowing our staff to function much more efficiently.
Another sign of our growth and success is that this past month we had almost 1400 volunteer hours in our store. That's almost double our usual for last year. To be able to utilize that many volunteers is a great sign that we are moving in the right direction. The challenge for us now is to keep those numbers up and to keep volunteers wanting to come back again and again. We need volunteer groups, connections to volunteer programs that will send us folks, and more of those precious regular volunteers that show up every week. Please pass any leads, suggestions, or interests in volunteering on to our new Customer Service Coordinator Molly Enright at molly@pdxrestore.org.
Our big volunteer adventure right now is our partnering up with the Oregon Remodelers Association for their "Remodelers Home Tour". This annual event is a showcase of remodeled homes in Portland and Salem. The ReStore [as you probably already know if you get these emails] is signed up to supply volunteers at the homes to take tickets.
This is a great opportunity for us; the marketing and advertising alone is terrific. Add to that our increased presence and connection with this great organization, and it really amounts to a good bit of exposure for us.
Please consider taking a shift at the Home Tour. Its fun, easy, and will help spread the word about our store. Email us at robin@pdxrestore.org if your interested.
Thanks for supporting our ReStore!

As you all know the ReStore has a very small staff and we rely heavily upon volunteers to make it all possible. We are truly a volunteer driven organization. And so of course we always need more volunteers.
Please consider supporting the work of Habitat by volunteering at the ReStore!
Our present needs are for:
- Driver Assistants - our Driver Assistants go out with the truck to help navigate, load and unload, and help the driver backup. You don't need special skills, just a willingness to help and a strong back.
- Backup Drivers - most of our drivers are on a regular shift but of course everyone gets sick, goes on vacation, or just needs a break now and then. So we need folks that can fill in at those times. Drivers must be able to drive a large box truck and have a clean driving record, and also must have a strong back.
We also always need help out in the store from individuals or groups. Let us know if your workplace, church or school has programs for volunteering that we could invite to join us!
Visit our website to learn more about volunteering at the ReStore.

Portland a Leader in the Green Building Industry |
OHSU Center for Health and Healing Americans consume more of the world's resources and produce more waste than any other country. 80% of Americans live in urban areas, which means cities have to be an important arena of change. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit organization that promotes buildings that are "sustainable." This frequently heard new buzzword means that a building is environmentally responsible, a healthy place to work and/or live, and is also profitable to construct. Leaders from every sector of the building industry are active in USGBC. Its more than 10,500 member organizations and network of 75 local chapters are focused on transforming the way that buildings and communities are designed, built, and operated. USGBC has created a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. The rating system is called LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Based on scientific principles, LEED emphasizes state of the art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. To promote expertise in building green, USGBC offers project certification, professional accreditation, training and practical resources. Portland has emerged as a leader in the green building industry, with the second most LEED awards (behind Seattle) of any city in the country. Come learn more on October 3rd, when the regional chapter of USGBC leads a tour of 5 LEED-certified commercial buildings in downtown Portland. For more information, or to order tour tickets, click on the following link to visit the website of the Cascadia Region Green Building Council.

The 11th Hour -- an Important New Documentary
|
An important new film just opened at the Fox Tower in Downtown Portland. Developed from 150 hours of interviews with 70 scientists, historians, activists, and environmental gurus, The 11th Hour is full of terrifying images and fascinating, profound voices. The focus is on the approaching collapse of our planet's ecosystems and the search for solutions to create a sustainable future. As bluntly put by NY Times reviewer Manohla Dargis, "If your head isn't lodged in the sand, much of what's said in the movie will be agonizing and familiar . . . it's bad, but it's not over yet." The film ends on a partially hopeful note, as some of today's leading innovators describe a few of their sustainable projects. See how many of these smart people you have heard of. Why isn't this film playing at ALL the Regal Cinemas? Thumbs way up!
