Almost 600 run in MennoNight 5k/10k

Almost 600 runners and walkers, many in the bright green shirt given to entrants, took part in the MennoNight 5K/10K Run Thursday. The course followed the Allegheny River on a humid evening.

Matt Jones of LaGrange, Ind., won the 5K race in 16:53. Hannah Chappell-Dick of Bluffton, Ohio, was the top female runner in 18:39.

In the 10K race, Lillie Koerner of Freeman, S.D., was the top female runner in 42:30. Jacob Landis of Sterling, Ill., won the race in 34:50.

Mennos models trash fashion Trash Fashion

Almost 50 youth modeled outfits created from trash and everyday objects for the Trash Fashion Show on Thursday evening on top of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va., sponsored the event and assisted with some of the design. Materials for the outfits included newsprint, magazines, plastic cups, tissue paper, trash bags and more.

According to mPress, 48 models walked the runway, most of them wearing clothes designed by the model or a youth group, and the rest wearing outfits designed by EMU students.

Children raise money for day care

Landis, 9, and three other girls walked around the convention center on Friday morning asking for donations for a daycare in Pennsylvania. The girls, participants in the children's convention at Pittsburgh 2011, said they hope to raise between 50 and $100 today. They carry a pan and ask people to place money in it ...

When bridges lead to a 'new creation'

One day, when Danisa Ndlovu was a boy in Zimbabwe, he and his mother crossed a bridge. He was so scared he wanted to crawl, even though his mother held his hand. Later he learned that even though crossing bridges can be scary, bridges "enable us to discover what's on the other side, to communicate, come together and eliminate the us-and-them mentality" ...
