Greetings!
We are highlighting the recent news of the Economics Center and our work in local schools and community. Ohio National Financial Services' support of our regional Stock Market Game program enabled two teams of eighth grade students to visit New York City and to present their winning investment strategies to portfolio managers of three major investment firms. The Economics Center is also pleased to introduce our Distance Learning initiative, an effort to expand our geographic reach and offer professional development training to more educators. Check out the stories below to learn more about the impact your Economics Center is having on the community. The Center had their most successful Annual Awards Luncheon to date. Thanks to all who joined us at the event. A full event recap, keynote presentation, photos and video coverage of the event are now available online. |
Stock Market Game Winners Visit New York City
On May 11, 2011 the Economics Center hosted the 2nd Annual Regional Stock Market Game Portfolio Challenge. Thanks to Ohio National Financial Services the students visited Jennison, Lazard and Goldman Sachs in New York. For many, this was their first experience in New York City. According to one of our students, this was the "best trip of my life." We appreciate Ohio National's support of this program and thank our judges, participants, teachers and all individuals that make this program the success that it is every year. Without a doubt, through the Stock Market Game, the Economics Center has been able to teach students about investing and excite them about learning. New Frontier in Teacher Training: Distance Learning
The Economics Center is developing a new distance learning program, thanks to a gift from the Alpaugh Family Foundation. This initiative leverages technology to create quality, online training opportunities for educators who teach economics and personal finance in their classrooms. Our aim is to provide full online courses and blended teacher training courses - those that utilize both traditional, in-person introduction with online learning - to educators. The Center's courses will be more responsive to the changing teacher training market and cater to a new generation of teachers who expect online professional development opportunities. Two courses will be introduced in September, 2011. Several more will be available by March, 2012.
"This program is crucial; it will provide a vehicle for reaching more educators and ultimately impacting more students with a stronger economic and financial education message."
- Dr. Val Krugh, Professional Development Director
