Passover
Making Passover Possible
Thank You Community Volunteers!

Many thanks go out to all of our community volunteers who assembled and delivered close to 250 Passover baskets to JFSA clients in our JFSA Care at Home, Ascentia and Families at Risk divisions on Sunday March 25th. These individuals and families would not be able to enjoy kosher foods for Passover, if not for the generosity of our wonderful community.

Temple Tifereth Israel family members Clara, Anne and Grove Hach assembled

The Jewish Relief Society, under the direction of Milane Aboody, purchased, packed and delivered over 140 bags of Passover goodies to our older adult
clients. Congregants from B'nai Jeshurun, Park Synagogue and Tifereth Israel and students from Agnon School also participated in this annual Passover tradition.

"Sunday was such a wonderful day for so many in our community. It was gratifying to see so many volunteers, of all ages, and from such a diverse group of Jewish synagogues, agencies and schools.  We are so grateful to each of the organizations for their on-going support," says Sandy Lusher-Waterhouse, JFSA manager of Volunteer Services.

If you or your organization would like to volunteer at JFSA, contact Sandy at 216.378.3475.

Sherri Park Fire victim receives help from JFSA

When news of the Sherri Park Apartment fire last week spread, JFSA staff were immediately contacted by the Red Cross and the Jewish Federation of Cleveland to provide assistance and support to tenants of the building, most of whom are elderly. The fire began at about 12:30 p.m. when a waterproofing contractor's tractor struck a gas line.

One of the tenants, a JFSA client who is 88 years old, needed to be hospitalized over night because of her anxiety over the fire, according to Paige Mintz, a case manager in JFSA's Older Adult Services. "The fire damage was extensive and I can't imagine how frightening it must have been for our clients," says Paige.

"We helped her walk up four flights of stairs to her apartment.  She was shocked by the damage she saw.  The first floor was charred black and every door to every apartment was knocked in," she explains.  "Luckily, our client's apartment was not damaged, but she was upset about the windows being left open to air out the smoke and food left in a pot on the stove," she added.

Several JFSA clients were affected by the fire and were placed in temporary housing, either at The Greens in Lyndhurst or Homewood Suites in Beachwood. It is anticipated that tenants will  be able to return home in a couple of weeks.

Horvitz YouthAbility
Israeli Trip a Great Success

Members of the Horvitz YouthAbility program recently returned from an exciting eight day journey to Israel. Among the cities the group visited were Jewish Cleveland's sister city Beit Shean, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.  According to Heidi Solomon, program coordinator, the eight days were filled with volunteer work at several schools, including harvesting produce for people in need and preparing meals at a soup kitchen before Shabbat.

One of the many highlights of the trip was the day the group spent in Beit Shean learning about the city and connecting with the Golani School in Beit Shean, a school for special needs youth. The visit began with a walking tour around the city - from the fascinating dig site to the modern town of today. After dinner in the guest house, they participated in a musical evening - singing Israeli songs and playing instruments. The next morning, the group opened the day with their theater performance "We Will Be Friends" in front of 70 young students of the Golani school (above).

The performance, focusing on the idea that people can be friends despite the differences between them, included songs and dances, and brought up names of inspiring figures in history who promoted peace and dialogue, such as Gandhi, Mother Teresa and others. According to Oshrat Barel, P2K (Partnership 2000) Director, "Every moment of the show was inspiring for the audience."

Many thanks to the volunteers who accompanied the group, the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland for making scholarships available through their Gifts of Israel and Israel Scholarship program, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and many other community organizations.

Families at Risk
D.C. Mission Aimed at Educating Legislators

On April 21st and 22nd, Families at Risk Executive Director Ginny Galili, JFSA Board member Andrew Kohn and Grants Manager Linas Vysnionis traveled to Washington DC as a member of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland's mission to educate and lobby elected officials around the key issues affecting the Cleveland Jewish and general communities, including funding for programs supporting domestic violence services. The Violence Against Womens Act (VAWA) and Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) help pay for JFSA's direct services to domestic violence victims and their children, including safety planning, case management, support groups, justice advocacy, and education on victims rights.

Among the officials with whom the Cleveland mission participants met were Senator Sherrod Brown (D), Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (D), the staff of Senator Robert Portman (R) and Congressman Steven LaTourette (R), and Congresswoman Betty Sutton (D). Legislators, especially Senators, were  urged to please bring VAWA to the Senate floor for a vote before their Spring break.  Detractors to the VAWA reauthorization bill focus their concern around language in the bill that addresses the needs of LGBT, immigrant and native tribal communities. We seek swift passage of VAWA's reauthorization and as broad a protection as possible for all victims of domestic violence and their children.

"We thank the Federation and lays leaders (Dara Yanowitz, Keith Libman and Beth Brandon) for organizing this important mission especially during this critical time," says Ginny. "Just a week before we arrived in DC, the Senate struck down the proposed cap in spending of VAWA funds. We were able to make our case directly to our elected officials to support the proposed cap and the direct impact it will have on our ability to serve our clients."

JFSA Cleveland Receives Prestigious KOVOD Awards

Every year the Association of Jewish Family & Children's Agencies (AJFCA) honors agencies for excellence in client services and programming through their KOVOD Awards competition. This year, JFSA Cleveland (the 8th largest JFSA in the US and Canada) is proud to receive two KOVOD Awards in the Creative Use of Volunteers in Client Services and the Collaborative Program Among JF&CS Agencies categories.

JFSA's Horvitz YouthAbility was selected as the top (1st place) program for Creative Use of Volunteers in Client Services for large agencies. The YouthAbility program is unique in that it engages young adult clients with disabilities to perform volunteer services for other clients, making them both clients and volunteers - helping themselves while helping others.

The Tina Project was selected as the 3rd place winner in the Collaborative Program Among JF&CS Agencies. As one of the first agencies to join,

JFSA's Know Abuse program was instrumental in developing The Tina Project, in response to Ohio

House Bill 19, as a multi-agency, multi-county, organizational collaboration to help Ohio schools become compliant with the new requirements regarding the prevention of teen dating violence and promoting healthy relationships among teens.
