YEAR END
IRA ROLL-OVERS

Last year's Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 included an extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover for distributions made during the 2011 tax year. The extension allows individuals 70½ and older to donate up to $100,000 from their IRAs to JFSA (a qualified charity) tax-free without having to recognize the transfer as income. December 31, 2011 is the deadline.

If you would like to execute an IRA rollover, here is a link to a sample letter you can customize and send to your IRA plan provider.  For additional questions contact Karen Leizman Moses, JFSA Major Gifts Officer, 216-504-6407.

Holocaust Survivor Support Services

Dental Students Learn How to Treat Aging Survivors

JFSA social workers Ellie Shoag and Gilda Katz had the opportunity to talk with dental students at Case Western Reserve University in the fall about a topic that isn't taught in the classroom-sensitivity when working with aging Holocaust survivors. Although dental students have worked with survivors in the past, this was a learning experience for them, Ellie says.

"They (students) thought the training was fantastic and they learned not just about being sensitive with survivors, but with all victims of trauma," she says.

Ellie says survivors can feel vulnerable sitting in a dentist chair for a long period of time. Bright lights shining in a person's face can also trigger a bad memory for a survivor, Ellie says. The point of the training was to educate the dental students, who in turn, will hopefully provide survivors with the best possible experience when receiving dental care.

"Our survivors are interacting in the world everyday and to know someone will be a little kinder and more sensitive to their needs is so important, " Ellie says.

JFSA Ascentia & PLAN
Big Boost for Art Therapy Program

Learn more about JFSA's Art Therapy. Plans for a joint art show between JFSA's Art Therapy program and the PLAN Holistic Recovery program are underway, thanks to a $4,633 dollar grant from the Cuyahoga Arts and Humanities Council.  The theme of the show is Mozart, who himself suffered from a mental illness.  Over a period of several months, clients will do extensive research on Mozart's life, music and culture during the Classical period between 1750 and 1830.  The groups are creating a multi-dimensional exhibit that includes costumes, instruments, drawings and mini opera performances. The show will be open to the public.

"We are thrilled to receive this grant," says Wendy Maayan, Director of Mental Health Services. "This gives a wider pool of clients the opportunity to work jointly together on something they can be proud of in the community."

Families At Risk

JFSA To Offer CEUs In Salon Domestic Violence Training

Lavish Color Salon in Warrensville Heights is the latest salon to take part in JFSA's Family Violence Services "Cut It Out" domestic violence training. JFSA staff Ginny Galili and Jen Roth will address different types of abuse, what a stylist should do if he or she suspects abuse in a client and how to talk with a client, at the training session on January 9th. Lavish Color Salon stylists will be the first to receive Continuing Education Credits. The CEUs are made possible through a partnership between JFSA and the Ohio Attorney General's office, explains Ginny.

"We learned of the Attorney General Office's interest in Cut It Out (a national curriculum) and asked if we could work together" says Ginny. "They were very excited and said they cannot do the work alone. The ability to offer free CEUs will definitely open more salon doors for us to do this outreach work and training."

If you would like to bring this brand-new program to your salon, call Ginny at 216-378-3420.

JFSA Mitzvah Projects

Mitzvah at Any Age

Two members of the community remind us all that we are never too old or too young to fulfill a mitzvah.

Sarah FurthSarah Furth used her Bat Mitzvah as an opportunity to help others. Last spring, Sarah did an Internet search on Jewish non-profits in the greater Cleveland area. She watched videos on JFSA's website and was inspired to give back. "I saw people that really needed help," Sarah says. "I thought it would be nice if they had money to purchase a CD, go to a movie or just buy a new pair of socks."

Sarah became a bat mitzvah in October at Temple Tifereth-Israel. She asked her family and friends to make a donation in her honor to JFSA. To date, more than $3,000 dollars in donations have been made in Sarah's honor. Sarah says she was able to make a connection between her mitzvah and her Torah portion, which included knowing there are consequences to your actions.  "I wanted to do the right thing by helping people in need," Sarah says. "They (clients) will get a lot of use and joy out of what they can buy with the money."

Eileen Sill and Family
Eileen Sill, poses with her daughter Shari and granddaughters Alexis and Brittany.

Eileen Sill, the mother of JFSA Board Member Shari Perlmuter, showed her support for JFSA's Hebrew Shelter Home while celebrating a milestone birthday. Instead of giving gifts, Eileen asked her family and friends to recognize her special day by making contributions to the shelter in her honor.

Celebrate Chanukah with a gift to JFSA's Annual Campaign

During Chanukah, many families celebrate this holiday by exchanging small gifts each night or on some nights of the eight day holiday.  For families with young children, it is customary to give gelt (money) to teach them to give some of it to charity and to add to the festive holiday spirit.

This year why not make a gift to the community through a donation to JFSA's Annual Campaign in honor of family and friends? The Annual Campaign is an integral component of the Agency's $24 million dollar budget which supports the most vulnerable members of our community. Without this source of funding, many vital JFSA programs would not be sustainable.
