Why JFSA's Annual Campaign Matters

State and County cuts impact $800,000 in services

JFSA's projected budget for fiscal year 2012 reflects the severe adverse impact of JFSA's expected loss of approximately $800,000 in revenues from State and County sources, presenting a significant challenge to our delivery of mental health services and services for older adults. We are looking to this year's Annual Campaign to help mitigate some of these losses by establishing an ambitious, but necessary campaign goal of $400,000. We are confident that we can meet this goal with the support of our community.

JFSA's Annual Campaign supports our general operating budget and is an integral component of the Agency's $24 million dollar budget. Without this source of funding, many vital JFSA programs would not be sustainable. This year, more than ever, we are counting on your help. Please make a meaningful gift to this year's campaign.

CCR Receives National Recognition

"The CCR is deeply honored by this national recognition. It validates CET as a highly effective treatment for serious mental illness," said Ray Gonzalez, ACSW, Executive Director for the Center for Cognition and Recovery.

The Center for Cognition and Recovery (CCR), a partnership between Planned Lifetime Assistance Network (PLAN) and JFSA is honored to be recognized nationally with The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) 2011 Science and Service Award for disseminating Cognitive Enhancement Therapy (CET). CET is an evidence-based practice that helps people with schizophrenia and related mental illnesses improve their processing speed, cognition (attention, memory, problem solving), social cognition (the ability to act wisely with others) and increase job preparation. CCR was formed to disseminate CET to local, regional and national agencies.

Families at Risk

Area Salon Learns to "Cut It Out"

DV training at salon- stylists
Stylists participate in domestic violence training with JFSA staff.

Stylists at The Stefano Savoca Salon in Lyndhurst took time out from coloring and cutting for domestic violence training courtesy of Ginny Galili, Executive Director for Families at Risk and Jen Roth, Coordinator for JFSA's Family Violence Services. Ginny and Jen referenced the national curriculum kit "Cut It Out" for salon professionals who want domestic violence training. They talked about different types of abuse, what to do if they suspect abuse in their client and how to talk to a client.

Salon co-owner Scott Savoka called the training "eye-opening." "I feel my staff will grow leaps and bounds from this," he says. "So many hairstylists know about it (domestic violence), but need to learn more."

Ginny says The Stefano Savoca Salon agreed to be the inaugural salon in JFSA's domestic violence training program and will receive a Know Abuse window cling.

If you would like to bring this brand new program to your salon, call Ginny at 216-378-3420.

The North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY)'s  Northeast Lake Region held its Annual Retreat in Cleveland last month. Reform Jewish teens from Ohio, Canada and New York spent an afternoon performing mitzvot in the community, which included some projects with JFSA. Teens helped create a parachute for the Horvitz YouthAbility program's latest play, sorted and stocked food at JFSA's food pantry and helped package special portraits of Holocaust Survivors that are being given to Survivors.

What A Ride! Big Success With Magical Mystery Tour Bus Fundraiser

The band was jammin', YouthAbility members were dancing and guests were bidding away on a variety of silent auction and raffle items at the Magical Mystery Tour Bus fundraiser last month at Temple Emanu El. The event netted $30,000 for YouthAbility, double what was anticipated.

Beatles tribute band Revolution Pie played lots of favorite tunes of the Fab Four. Over 200 guests got a chance to see YouthAbility members in action through a video highlighting the volunteer work and projects in which the members are involved. JFSA Board members Gary and Janice Bilchick and YouthAbility parents Howard and Linda Chapman co-chaired the event, which was dedicated to the Chapman's daughter Kim, a YouthAbility member, who passed away last year at the age of 22.

Holocaust Survivor Support Program

Jones Day volunteers help Survivors access reparations

Survivor reparations volunteer
Adrienne Wasserman helps complete paperwork for Survivors.

Attorneys with the Jones Day law firm are helping local Holocaust Survivors complete applications for pension payments from the German Government. The reparation is for Survivors who worked in a ghetto during the war. There is also a one-time payment available for ghetto workers with a deadline of December 31, 2011. Volunteers with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland are also helping Survivors complete aplications for that particular reparation. If you would like more information about these reparations, please contact Sheri Sax at 216.378.3440.
