Greetings!

Safety belt use declined statewide from 85% in 2009 to 84% in 2010.  Not only that, but deaths are up for the month of June--the current death toll for the month is the highest it has been in 4 years, and the month isn't over.

The answer to arresting the decline is safety belt belt use in Nebraska is not only to step up ticketing, but also to increase education efforts, and much of  that effort rests with you, safety belt coalition volunteers.

· Safety restraints, when used, are the most effective safety feature ever introduced for vehicles, cutting in half the likelihood for fatal and serious injuries resulting from traffic crashes

· In 2009, the 15% of Nebraskans who did not buckle up accounted for 68% of the occupants killed in traffic crashes.

· Seat belt use reduces fatalities by 74 percent in rollover crashes involving passenger cars and by 80 percent in rollover crashes involving light trucks.
