Greetings!
The 186 fatalities for the year 2010 represents the second lowest annual total since the state began counting fatalities in 1936. The lowest total was 166 in 1944.
Woo Hoo! This is fabulous news! The bad news is that of the 162 vehicle occupants who were killed in 2010, 128 were not wearing safety belts. That means that 79% of the fatalities who were in vehicles were not belted.
Many factors combine to eliminate traffic fatalities, but wearing a safety belt is an individual's single best defense in the event of a crash. Thanks for all of your work to ensure that all Nebraskans buckle up every trip, every time.
So pass the word--as the buckled rate goes higher, our fatality rate goes lower.
Please do what you can to get the buckling rate to 100%. Not clicking a belt is a bad reason to die or be injured in a crash.

The Department of Transportation addresses Ejections
| | U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced a final rule aimed at decreasing occupant ejections in passenger vehicles on Thursday, January 13, 2011. The new U.S. Department of Transportation standard will begin phasing in during 2013.
"Rollover crashes are the deadliest of all crash types and this is another important step in our efforts to reduce fatalities and serious injuries that result from them," said Administrator David Strickland, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "When fully implemented, we believe this standard will prevent on average 373 fatalities and 476 serious injuries every year." Click here to read the article
In the meantime, safety belts can save lives in rollover crashes. WOWT news reports that "Two men were injured in a rollover crash on Interstate 29 Thursday morning just north of Council Bluffs." They were wearing safety belts, which may have saved their lives.

Please do what you can to encourage safety belt use.
