Teens are the least likely group to be wearing belts, but the most likely group to experience a crash.
Safety Belts reduce fatalities and injuries by 45 to 50% in crashes. Join us in encouraging Nebraska teens to buckle up, every trip, every time.

Greetings! While you've got the kids working on safety belts and the importance of wearing them, here's some more opportunities to not only address safe driving, but win some scholarship money while they're doing it.
Act Out Loud! The National Organization for Youth Safety (NOYS) is sponsoring their annual Act Out Loud contest. Only one entry per scho ol is permitted, but the project getting the most votes can win $10,000. Plus, excluding the Grand Prize winner, the top 5 vote-getters will also win $5000 each. AND, excluding the Grand Prize winner and the the top 5 vote getters, judges will select the top 5 best projects to win $5000 each. Check out the Act Out Loud Contest Rules.
NOYS is also holding a Drive 2 Life Contest for the best PSA. In this case, they're looking for individuals and group entries cannot be accepted. The NOYS website states, "We are looking for the best ideas for public service announcements, conceived by young people and aimed at young people, to alert them to the dangers of distracted driving." Check out the rules and prizes for Drive 2 Life.
Good luck with your entries! Don't forget to promote the importance of protecting yourself from distracted drivers and all other hazards by wearing a safety belt.

This is the third time we've done the Come Home Safe project. We've learned a few things about schools that observe high compliance rates!- Schools that have experienced a tragedy typically observe high buckling compliance. The tragic incidence of a student dying due to the lack of a safety belt reminds everyone to buckle up.
- Some schools with high numbers are from communities with high numbers. For example, since the military requires belt use, schools in military communities usually show high buckling percentages.
- Sometimes schools have a strong ongoing education program, especially in areas where driving hazards are common. For example, in areas where deer collisions are common or where weather patterns frequently inflict hazardous road conditions, schools may include a safety belt emphasis in their normal curriculum.
There is still plenty of time
to sign up for Come Home Safe and to schedule 2 safety belt observations before our drawing date of May 4, 2011.
Every day the papers bring news of another traffic fatality, and many of the crashes have fatal outcomes because of an unbelted driver or passenger.
