Greetings!

So, what's the good news?  You've had projects all year to promote safety belt use.  Share your story!  What have you done in your area that has worked (or maybe not worked all that well and others would be smart to avoid it)?  The Chronicle can publish your pictures and stories of all the great things you're doing to promote safety belts in your area.
Another Good Reason to Wear Your Seatbelt
On December 3, 2010, a "Wet Lab" was conducted in Partnership by the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the Nebraska State Patrol, the Bellevue Police Department, the Papillion Police Department, the La Vista Police Department, the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety, Nebraska Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the Iowa State Patrol, the Omaha Police Department, and AAA Nebraska.

I had the opportunity to participate as a volunteer drinker. Essentially, it was an experience where the volunteers drank alcohol all afternoon, and law enforcement officers practiced doing sobriety tests on us.

The Wet Lab coincided with the announcement of December 2010 as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

Wet lab blow testI have no illusions that I'm able to drink to excess and maintain my ability to drive well.  As it turns out, drinking to excess also makes my balance even worse than it normally is, and even prevents me from remembering the entire alphabet.

While the event reinforced the "Don't drink and drive" message, for me it also reiterated the importance of safety belts.  People do drink and drive, because frankly, once you're drunk, you can't make a good decision about whether to drive (so decide not to drive ahead of time!) And if you're not drinking but happen to be driving near someone who is, your best defense in the event of a crash is wearing your safety belt, every trip, every time.

Thanks for all you do as a member of the Click It coalition to promote the need for safety belts.  Drunk drivers are just one reason for everyone to buckle up.
