Greetings!
The total number of March traffic fatalities in Nebraska was only 11! "The March traffic toll has not been lower since
1948, when eight fatalities occurred," says the March traffic fatality report from NDOR.

This is huge!  This is outstanding!  Think of how many more cars are on the road, and how many more miles of road we have in Nebraska since 1948!  While this low number cannot be wholly attributed to safety belts, it is clear that safety belts played a large part in reducing the number of fatalities.

We still have room for improvement, however.  "Seven of the nine vehicle occupants killed were not using safety belts." (To make the full eleven fatalities, there was one pedestrian and one bicyclist.)   In addition, "Twenty-three of the 34 vehicle occupants killed during 2010 were not wearing safety belts."

While the numbers are looking great, even one fatality due to the lack of a safety belt is too many, so keep up your good work in getting the word out about safety belts!  The word is to wear one--every trip, every time.

What's an MPOT? Try Miss Panhandle (that's right, as in Nebraska Panhandle) Outstanding Teen.  And Miss Kodi Lee Baumann, our reigning Miss Panhandle Outstanding Teen, has chosen safety belts as hKodi Baumanner platform.

Kodi's brother was seriously injured in a severe crash.  He was unbelted, and the small Toyota truck rolled.  He doesn't remember all of his injuries, but Kodi and the rest of her family and his friends went through some tense moments after the crash and during his recovery.  She has chosen a theme of "Cross your Heart, not Your Fingers"

Kodi has jumped right into the thick of promoting safety belts with a PSA on the radio and observations at her high school.  She has also put together a bracelet that says "Cross your heart, not yocross your heart, not your fingersur fingers" that you can get from her for $1.00, or $2.00 if it needs to be shipped.  Or, if you're in the Panhandle, Kodi is available for speaking engagements about safety belts for your group.  For elsewhere in the state, check with Kodi for availability. You can contact Kodi via Facebook, or email at mpot2010@hotmail.com.

We're having fun with Facebook.  Join the cause!  Post your comments about safety belts!  Maybe Coalition members are a little more interested in safety belts than the average Facebook user--but only because we know about some sad results when safety belts are not used.

You can help spread the word, and you can add your belief that safety belts are an important part of driving!  Join the cause; recruit your friends; add your comments.  Let's spread the word that safety belts do save lives and prevent injuries.

Unfortunately, people tend to learn the hard way.  They need to experience a crash or have someone they know experience a crash.  But testimonies from people who know can help. So add your message!
