NHTSA announces record low fatalities!

Greetings!
Good point from Oregon.  The laws of physics don't care how great your vehicle is--an object in motion tends to remain in motion until stopped by an equal and opposite force.  Like hitting the windshield.  Pass the word.

Turns out YOU CAN separate a man from his truck
Congratulations Nebraska!

It's wonderful that we've reached statewide safety belt usage of 85%!  This outstanding achievement necessitates a reevaluation of Honor Roll.

The Honor Roll has always required 2 observations at least 30 days apart The change based on these new statistics is that  at least 90% or more of observed vehicle occupants must be buckled.

As always, the Honor Roll can still pertain to any group, business, or even a whole community.  And completing an Honor Roll project is still easy.  Just schedule a time to go outside and observe whether the drivers and passengers coming into your parking lot are wearing their belts.  An observation form is available on the Click It-Don't Risk It website at www.clickitdontriskit.com.

If you do not achieve 90%, do some education with your group.  Try posters, brochures, announcements, and reminders of company policy for those companies who require their staff to buckle up.  The "Diana's Last Message" video is a powerful explanation of the need to wear a belt.  Then schedule another observation at least 30 days after the first one.  If you have 2 observations of at least a 90% buckled rate, use our website to notify us and we'll schedule your visit to the State Capitol to shake the governor's hand and receive your Honor Roll certificate.  You can attend the proclamation ceremony whenever it is convenient for you, or you can choose to have your certificate mailed to you.

The more groups that we can include on the Honor Roll, the closer we will be to having everyone in Nebraska safely buckled up, every trip, every time.  Think about the groups you belong to or your business, and consider achieving Safety Belt Honor Roll designation one of your projects this year.  You will be invited to attend the Governor's Proclamation ceremony and receive a certificate signed by Governor Heineman that documents your achievement.  Even more wonderful, you'll know that you are saving lives by encouraging this simple safety habit, which has been shown to be 45 to 50% effective in eliminating fatalities.

We're looking forward to receiving your Honor Roll application!

NHTSA announces record low fatalities!

There is plenty of good news about traffic safety these days.  On March 11, 2010, NHTSA announced "that the number of overall traffic fatalities reported at the end of 2009 reached the lowest level since 1954, declining for the 15th consecutive quarter. According to early projections, the fatality rate, which takes into account the number of miles traveled, reached the lowest level ever recorded."

That is outstanding!  Safety belts have made a huge difference in the fatality rate.  The overall decline is also the result of safer roads, safer vehicles and motorists driving less.

But too many people still die in crashes, and safety belts are still the primary way to reduce injuries and death in traffic crashes.  Plus, wearing a safety belt is one thing an individual can do to ensure his or her own safety.  Promoting safety belts in your group or workplace is a way to help influence whether your group or work environment is affected by the sudden injury or death of a friend or colleague.
