Greetings!
The August Fatality Report just came out from the Nebraska Department of Roads.  There were 28 traffic fatalities in Nebraska in August.  The report stated that August 2009 was the highest month for traffic fatalities since June of 2007 when 30 were killed.  The report also stated that 24 of the fatalities were vehicle occupants, and 17 of those were not wearing safety belts.

We will never know if any of those 17 would have lived had they been wearing their safety belts, but statistics show that at least some of them would very likely have lived through their respective crashes. A safety belt prevents injury and death in a crash 45-50% of the time.

Thanks to all of you in the Coalition for the work you do to promote the use of safety belts.  Our goal is to get every Nebraskan to buckle up, every trip, every time.
Come Home Safe
It's time for High School Homecoming, and once again, Click It is promoting the use of safety belts to help make sure all Nebraska high school students come home safe.  jpeg come home logo

Fatal accidents involving high school students are far too frequent regardless of the cause.  Even one fatality is too many.

Click It is once again promoting parking lot checks for high schools.  We're hoping for many new Honor Roll winners, and looking forward to distributing cash to our winners who participate in the program.  Participants are eligible for a drawing for a $1000 grand prize for schools who conduct 2 parking lot checks plus some safety belt education.  This year we're also holding 2 drawings for $500 cash prizes for schools who only conduct one check and some safety belt education. In addition, timeframes have been extended from last year's project.  Schools have until the end of April to complete their second check and their education program.

Make sure your local high school is signed up to participate in Come Home Safe, and that they are eligible for cash prizes!

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety

Have you survived a crash?  Do you know anyone who has survived?  No one wants to have a crash, but they happen, and safety belts prevent 45-50% of serious injuries and fatalities.

There's a website for survivors to register and become a member of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates).  Advocates works with "survivor advocates" who have suffered personal consequences from crashes.  They work to promote and protect highway safety laws throughout the country.

If you know anyone who has survived a crash, let them know about this additional way to promote safety belt use and improve highway and auto safety!
