Greetings! My NOYS calendar reminds me that "according the the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an average of more than 17 teens die each day on American roads during June, July, and August--the three months with the highest teen crashes."
Nebraska numbers reinforce that with too many news stories about teen crashes, so it's great to honor 2 schools in the month of June for using the Honor Roll program to check on and increase safety belt usage!

Norfolk Middle School makes the Honor Roll!
|
In collaboration with the Norfolk Police Division, members of the Norfolk Panther Jr. Optimist Club observed vehicles arriving at the Norfolk Junior High before school at designated drop-off points at both dates. Observations were documented on the Observational Sealt Belt Use Survey Data Collection Form by the members. Students "caught" wearing a safety belt were given a ticket making them eligible to win one of two gift cards to the mall provided by the Club. Police officers helped control traffic and distributed information to parents/drivers.
Pictured from left to right are Mark Claussen, their leader, Megan Dolezal, Governor Heinemann, Tori Woeppel and
Blair Collins. The girls will all be 9th graders in the fall.

Raymond Central Jr/Sr High School strikes gold! |
|
Jean Rempfer (left of Governor Heinemann) and Mary Rittenburg (right) worked with Deputy Nick Heitmann at Raymond Central Junior/Senior High School to check on whether the students use their safety belts. They stopped every car coming into the school to check on safety belt usage. They documented an impressive 92% on the first check and increased to an outstanding 100% belted on the second check. Students at Raymond had the chance to win a $50 movie card--yay for extra butter on the popcorn! Even better than popcorn is decreasing the chance that a student at Raymond will be hurt or killed in a crash. Mary reports that the project was a lot of fun. Try an honor roll project at your school or business!
