Greetings!
How do safety belts and the economy go together? The commentators all keep saying, "fasten your seatbelt, it's going to be a bumpy ride." As you know, it's best to wear that safety belt every trip, every time, even though this metaphor implies that most people only buckle up when there's danger ahead.

Holiday Holla |

Maybe this economy is motivating you to try to earn some extra money. Here's something to think about--how about entering a contest to win $10,000 just by singing about safety belts?

The National Organization for Youth Safety has organized a contest which is brought to you byThe Allstate Foundation and Keep the Drive
The NOYS website offers, "Want a chance to win $10,000, meet and perform in front of a celebrity judge at the Mall of America and maybe even help save some lives this holiday season?
Just go to www.keepthedrive.com and submit a video of yourself (and up to two friends) performing a holiday carol using your own funny or compelling lyrics about smart driving. Car crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens, and the holidays are a deadly time for teen drivers. So hurry --grab your video camera - the deadline is 5:00 p.m. CT, Nov. 2, 2008. The top five semi-finalists will win a trip to the Mall of America to perform before a live audience and a celebrity judge on December 6. The winner takes home $10,000; second and third place winners each receive $5,000 and $3,000 respectively.
Encourage your friends to enter too, because the more we "holla" about smart driving, the more lives we'll hopefully save."

Using Safety Belts Can Save Money |
|
|
Speaking of money, safety belts are a huge money saver for states that enforce their use.The NHTSA site recently published a couple of studies that estimate cost savings in several states--Rhode Island and Vermont--based on implementing a primary seat belt law. These estimates used actual hospital discharge data to estimate the total medical costs of crashes.
While actual savings would be spread between insurance companies, the State and Federal Government, and the actual taxpayers, even conservative estimates are easily in the millions of dollars.
Cost savings are not the only reason to buckle up! Since injuries and fatalities are reduced by 45 to 50% by the correct use of a safety belt--spread the word that you can not only save money, you might save your life by buckling up! |
