Greetings!
It's Valentine's Day! It's a day for remembering those who make up the various communities in our lives--our friends, our families, our coworkers. Anyone connected to you is part of your community. While you're thinking about cards and gifts, think about reminding those who are important in your life how important it is that they wear their safety belt. Driving is the most dangerous activity most of us do, and it's very important to buckle your safety belt every trip, every time.
Buckle up for love! |

| Burke Students talk about Safety Belts |
|
At our last visit to Burke High School, we tried a safety belt awareness exercise with 6 different groups of students. Each group of students was told to stand up if they've ever been in a crash. Then we asked, "has anyone in your family or any of your friends ever been in a crash? If so, stand up." In every group, nearly everyone was standing!
Then we asked, "Do you or does anyone in your family ever travel in a car without buckling up? If so, please sit down. How about friends or extended family? If anyone you know ever drives or rides in a car without buckling up, please sit down." Again, in every group, nearly everyone ended up sitting back down.
The exercise illustrated that nearly everyone knows someone who has experienced a car crash, and nearly everyone knows someone who does not wear his or her safety belt. It stands to reason that eventually one of those students will know someone who is injured or killed in a crash because he or she was not wearing a safety belt.
Try this exercise at your next event! Increase awareness of how close we all are to having our lives changed by the lack of safe buckling behavior! |
