Scents-ible Solutions News...

One of the greatest occurrences in 2011 was the completion of the NEW Scents-ible Solutions Aromatherapy Training Manual. This 90 page guide to using the Scents-ible Solutions Program is full of information about Aromatherapy, the research behind the use of essential oils, the protocols for using the 15 blends, a complete description of the blends and how to use them, samples of a policy statement and consent form, and the Material Safety Data Sheets for each of the essential oils used. Facilities instituting the Scents-ible Solutions Aromatherapy Program are required to purchase the Training Manual. Individual care providers are not required to have a manual but will receive an outline on the proper use of the blends.

The blends within the Scents-ible Solutions Program were created to address:

Anxiety & Aggression - Restore Peace and Tranquility

Insomnia - Helps Relieve Insomnia & Pain and Sweet Dreams

Pain - Comfort, Rapid Relief, Muscle/Joint Relief, and AHHH!

Mental Stimulation - Promote Alertness and Vitality

Unwanted Weight Loss - Appetite Stimulant and Bon Appetit

Stress Relief for Caregivers - Care Giver Relief, Unwind, and Utopia

An interesting trend we are witnessing is the spread of use of these blends throughout a wide scope of facilitates (Hospices, Palliative Care, Hospitals, programs for persons with Developmental Disabilities) and individuals addressing the needs of a wide variety special populations. Many people are beginning to purchase one or more of the blends to meet their personal needs. It has been a joy to watch the recognition of the power of essential oils in health care.

We've been getting the word out about Scents-ible Solutions while teaching numerous classes, lecturing, and participating in programs and conferences. Some of the highlights have been:

Duke University's Integrative Medicine's Capstone Course

North Carolina Associate Degree Nursing Council

Alliance of International Aromatherapists Conference

MAHEC's Partnering Western and Complementary-Alternative Medicine

   Conference

Planetree Conference (with the Veteran's Administration well represented)

University of North Carolina's School of Medicine's Program on Integrative

   Medicine

One of our top priorities for early 2012 is to get the new Scents-ible Solutions web-site up and running. Until then, you can learn more about the essential oil blends at by clicking on their names above.

A SPECIAL WINTERTIME TREAT

Ah...the fresh, crisp smell of the out of doors. For many this is a scent that brings back memories of sleigh rides, fireside evenings, family gatherings, good food, and Christmas trees.

Spruce needle - Black Spruce (Picea mariana) possesses a spirited and inspiring smell that brings the outdoors inside. It has an affinity for the entire respiratory system and encourages deep breathing while stimulating the immune system with a softer, sweeter scent than most other conifers. The antiviral, and anti-inflammatory qualities of Spruce needle essential oil helps prevent viral illnesses or recover from these challenges that frequently comes along with winter weather. It is an expectorant that also lowers stress and anxiety, and eases mental and physical exhaustion.

Spruce needle is a great gift when you need to recharge and re-inspire...to guide one from the dark of winter into the rebirth of spring. Robbi Zeck, author of The Blossoming Heart, says, "Spruce adds a depth of insight previously unknown and has the capacity to shift you from feelings of defeat to feeling refreshed and motivated."

Historically, Spruce needle has been used in baths (6 to 8 drops with bath salts), in massage oils (10-12 drops in 1 ounce), and diffused into the air. It makes a delightful spritzer (4oz distilled water, 15 drops Spruce needle, 6 drops Cedarwood Atlas) - shake well before each use. *This oil can be a skin irritant, use carefully when applying to the skin.
