Cindy's Corner

I recently went to a concert here in town. I was very excited about it and made the trek through the snow and ice to the theater, found my seat and settled in with my friends and family eagerly awaiting showtime. Just before the show began, a group came in and took their seats in front of us. And, ZOWIE! The amount of perfume was nauseating. I spent much of the performance struggling to breathe and wiping my eyes because they were watering so profusely that I had difficulty seeing the stage. My companions experienced the same. I know that those in front of us meant no harm, they were happy and cordial people. My sinuses hurt for a couple of days afterwards, and I had a nose bleed when I got home. According to the EPA, 33% of the population reports some form of chemical sensitivity. And it seems that this number is on the rise. We know that artificial fragrances trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks. It is interesting that we have banned cigarette smoking in most public places, and yet, no one says a word about the heavy use of perfumes, which can be just as harmful and irritating. Perfume is meant to be alluring, a sort of "come closer" signal. When it is used as such, (and made with natural ingredients!) it can be a delightful addition to one's daily outlook and appearance. Too much, however, instead of being an invitation to get closer, becomes a wall that says "STAY AWAY", and becomes a hindrance to connecting with people around you. I realize I'm preaching to the choir here for most of you. Thanks for listening!

Featured Essential Oil:
GRAPEFRUIT (Citrus paradisi)
by Carole Taylor
The holidays are over. And
it is cold and dark. For many of us, New Year's resolutions are already
blown. It seems to be shaping up to be a long, grey trudge through the
next 2 months!
And, happily, it doesn't have to be that way! We have citrus oils that can
bring a brightness and optimism to the gloom of deep winter.
Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is one of my favorite oils. It has a
light, bright sweet citrus odor that just makes me feel more cheerful and
hopeful.
Grapefruit is thought to be a hybrid of Orange
(Citrus sinensis) and Pomelo (Citrus maxima), and is grown extensively in Florida
and California. The tree is generally about 16-20 feet tall,
although, it can grow up to about 45 feet.
The essential oil of Grapefruit, like most citrus oils, is created by a
process called "cold expression" of the peel.
(See our article on Lemon essential oil in our newsletter archives for
more information on this process.) The oil itself can be yellow, yellowish-green
or pale yellow-orange color. It is used
not only in aromatherapy, but also as a food flavoring and fragrance in
detergents, soaps and personal care products.
In aromatherapy, Grapefruit essential oil has several
uses. It is used in skin care for
congested and oily skin and as a skin tonic/toner. It stimulates the lymphatic system, which
makes it a great choice when dealing with cellulitis, water retention and
obesity. You might ask how it may be
helpful for obesity and there is some thought that its anti-depressant
properties are the key here. It is calming,
uplifting, builds self-esteem and a sense of self-worth, and brings a new
excitement to life when one is feeling depressed, over-wrought and/or drained.
Grapefruit essential oil blends beautifully with Lavender
(see our Serenity blend), Frankincense, Bergamot,
Orange and any other citrus.

A Recipe for You....
From Carole Taylor and Cyndy Verardi
I visited my sister and her family at Christmas, and we had
a fun time playing with shea butter and essential oils. We created a Lip Gloss that we all just love,
so I thought I'd share it with you all!
This made about 18 tubes.
Ingredients (all available through LovingScents, of course!):
2oz Shea Butter, Yellow
½ oz Jojoba Golden oil
½ oz Beeswax
2 drops Honey
15 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
10 drops Orange Essential Oil
3 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
In a double boiler, carefully melt the Shea Butter using low
heat. When the shea butter is melted,
add the Jojoba oil and honey, and then the beeswax. When the beeswax is completely melted, stir
in the essential oils.
Pour your mixture into lip balm tubes (you need to work fast
here!), and put them uncapped into the freezer.
(Tip - rubber band your tubes together, they will stand upright in a
plastic bowl.) They should stay in the
freezer until completely hard, which could be 5-10 minutes. Then, remove, cap, and enjoy!
