CYNTHIA

Here we are at the holiday season once again...a time to go out and shop, and shop, and shop until you drop.  Oh, that wonderful feeling of holiday exhaustion.  But, what do you get for kind Aunt Betty or your son's outstanding teacher or the nice pet sitter?  You could run to the nearest shopping center and purchase the latest "perfume" to enhance Aunt Betty's sexual allure, or a hand cream that smells like cranberries for junior's teacher, or how about some bubble gum scented hand sanitizer for Fido's friend?

STOP!

Since when does giving someone a gift that can be highly toxic and can induce asthma or other negative respiratory responses tell someone how much you love and/or appreciate them?

Why not share the wonderful scents of nature that not only smell good but are also healthy?  Aunt Betty might enjoy an all natural perfume called Moroccan Memories made of Jasmine and Cedarwood Atlas in Jojoba.  To let the teacher know how special they are to you, how about Maxi Moist Shea Butter formula with the delightful oils of Geranium, Rosewood and Frankincense that will aid the skin to stay moist and soft.  Hand sanitizer is a great idea for the pet sitter but instead of giving them a skin drying cocktail of petroleum and artificial fragrances, consider Purely Fresh made with Witch hazel extract and the essential oils of Lavender, Lime, Lemongrass, and Tea tree that is kind to the skin and has a pleasant scent of aromatic plants.

Let us assist you in selecting the gifts you give to let those you care about know they are blessings of health, happiness and caring.  Please feel free to contact us if you need more ideas!

May all your holidays be filled with joy, love, peace, and good health.

WE THANK YOU AND WANT YOU TO KNOW HOW MUCH WE APPRECIATE YOU!

Featured Essential Oils:

CINNAMON LEAF & CLOVE BUD
(Cinnamomum zeylanicum & Eugenia caryophyllata)
by Carole Taylor

.
Ah, nothing says "Winter" quite like the spicy smells of Cinnamon and Clove Bud!  And, we use them with good reason - they make us feel warm,  comforted, cheerful and invigorated.

Cinnamon Leaf (Cinnamomum zeylenicum/Cinnamomum verum) comes from the Lauraceae family of plants.  It is an evergreen the grows to about 45 feet tall.  It is native to India, Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka, although it has been transported to Indonesia, the Seychelles and Zanzibar.

This plant will produce 3 different essential oils - Cinnamon Bark, Cinnamon Leaf, and Cinnamon Root.  While both the oils from the bark and leaf can be used in aromatherapy, for general use, we at LovingScents prefer the Cinnamon Leaf oil as it is far gentler than the oil from the bark of the tree.   It is important to note that Cinnamon Leaf oil should not be confused with Cassia (Cinnamomum cassia), which is also known as Chinese Cinnamon.  Both Cassia and Cinnamon Bark oil contain extremely high levels of cinnamic aldehyde, a strong skin irritant and sensitizer.   Cinnamon Leaf oil has a fairly low level of this chemical, and, we still urge caution and dilution when using this oil.

Cinnamon has an interesting history.  It has been used for thousands of yearsin both Eastern and Western cultures.  It is mentioned in the Bible, Egyptians used it in their embalming practices.  Arab traders provided the spice to Greeks and Romans while keeping its source a secret.  It was the holding of this secret that provoked the Portuguese to discover the route around the Cape to Ceylon and India.

Cinnamon Leaf oil is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.  It has also been demonstrated to have anti-viral propertie, and may be useful for resisting contagious diseases.  It can be used to relieve the feeling of "puniness" that follows a fever, aches and chills from the early stages of cold or flu, and is beneficial during convalescense.  It has also been recommended for nervous depression.

Cinnamon Leaf oil is typically used by inhalation.  If used on the skin, it should be diluted to a level of no more than 2%  (which is 12 drops to 1 ounce of carrier or butter.)  To learn more, click here.

Clove Bud (Eugenia caryophyllata/Syzygium aromaticum) is also an evergreen which too, grows up to 45 feet tall.  It, however, is a member of the Myrtaceae (Myrtle) family.  Its leaves are glossy green and it produces red flowers and purple fruits.  The Clove bud (also known as a calyx) is harvested by beating them from the tree, then dried and finally water distilled to produce the oil.

Cloves also have a fascinating history.  The Chinese Han period (220-206 BC) is credited with the first recorded use where it was used to sweeten the breath.  Marco Polo introduced cloves to Europe around 1300 AD.  Again, it was the Arabs that provided this spice to Europeans, and the subsequent history of Clove is tied to that of Cinnamon.  Today, the largest supplier of Cloves is Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania)

Historically, Cloves have been used in pomanders to keep plague and epidemics at bay.
I personally remember studding oranges with cloves at Christmas time as a child.   A tea of cloves will help nausea, and the oil was used for toothache.  Today, the oil is still often used in dental preparations to relieve oral pain.

It is an anti-septic and inhibits a large spectrum of microbes.  It can also be used (diluted of course!) for arthritis and sprains, as an insect repellent, as a means to generate warmth, and it helps stimulate digestion and appetite.  It is a dermal irritant, and care should be taken to properly dilute it if applied to the skin.  It can also be inhaled or diffused.  For both topical and inhalation use, dilute to no more than 1% (6 drops per 1 ounce of carrier or butter.)  To learn more, click here.

Both of these oils combine well with citruses, especially Orange 5X, Tangerine and Mandarin.  (See the Holiday Spice Blend below!)
