WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE .
. .
LovingScents
has been approved as a signer on the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. What this means is that we have pledged to
use safe ingredients now and over the long term. We agree to participate in conference
calls and in-person meetings, and periodic follow-ups to ensure compliance with
the Compact. In addition, the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database
(www.cosmeticdatabase.com) of personal care products will soon show a graphic
representation of where we are in terms of Compact compliance. This compact is the closest thing we have to
regulation or a meaningful seal of approval for cosmetics in this country. It
would be better if there were government regulation, but until then, consumers
can use the Compact as a tool in their search for safer cosmetics.
Why is
this important? Major loopholes in US federal law allow the $50 billion
cosmetics industry to put unlimited amounts of chemicals into personal care
products with no required testing, no monitoring of health effects and
inadequate labeling requirements. In
fact, cosmetics are among the least-regulated products on the market.
The
Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, sponsor of the Compact, is working to protect your
health by eliminating the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and
other health problems. We urge you to
visit this website at:
www.safecosmetics.org and become active in working for a safer future
for ourselves and the next generations.

ABOUT THE FLU ... PUTTING IT IN PERSPECTIVE
In the
April newsletter, we listed several essential oils that could prove beneficial
in warding off the swine (OOPS, H1N1) flu.
Valerie Cooksley, author of Aromatherapy:
A Lifetime Guide to Healing with Essential Oils (ISBN 0-13-349432-2), Certified Aromatherapist,
Registered Nurse, and presenter at the 7th Annual Scientific Wholistic
Aromatherapy Conference, read our piece and was kind enough to share the
following, "May I suggest you add Manuka for its wide spectrum
anti-infectious properties, Rosalina, and Scotch Pine, for their respiratory,
immune enhancing and anti-viral effects, as well as Hyssop for water retention,
breaking up mucous and preventing pneumonia." Thank you, Valerie, for sharing this with us
and our readers. You are appreciated.
We also
want to thank Donna-Lee Powers for sharing this: eating sauerkraut is supposed to be very
effective at destroying viruses, bacteria...)
In the news shortly after the avian bird flu scare, there was a snippet
in the paper about a small Russian town with flu epidemic that stopped
feeding the birds as usual out of fear; an old couple took pity on the birds
and fed them what they had which was sauerkraut...the birds that ate the sauerkraut
did not die as expected from the flu...??? It was pointed out that all
ancient cultures had fermented cultures which kept them healthy: yogurt in
Europe and Mediterranean, pickled foods, kimchee in Asia, etc. Rather interesting...
