Some people have asked me...
Why do your prices fluctuate?
We make considerable effort to keep our prices as low as possible because we firmly believe that high quality, therapeutic grade oils should be accessible to all. Unfortunately, sometimes outside events challenge this belief.
Essential oil prices fluctuate for many reasons. Currently, the main reason is the high and rising cost of fuel. As our oils come from all over the world, there is some considerable expense in getting them here. Further, these fuel price increases also show up in the our costs for bottles, jars, lids, etc - all the supplies needed to package the oils. The fuel price increases aren't only affecting our shipping prices for these supplies - they also affect the actual cost of making the packaging, as glass and plastic require some use of petro-chemicals to be manufactured.
Sometimes we will see a huge increase in the price for a particular oil which is due to scarity of that oil. This is caused by a couple of things - a natural disaster such as the recent mudslides in Indonesia which destroyed many of the plants from whence we get Patchouli; or war, as in Madagascar, which is where we get the best Ravensara. We do look for other sources, and are also quite happy to suggest substitute oils which have similar properties, however, we feel that you - our customers - have come to count on us to supply a very high quality product, and we endeavour to maintain that trust and expectation.
Whenever we can get a good price, we DO pass that on to you.
As an aside, it is very easy to for us at LovingScents to sometimes throw up our hands and bitterly exclaim that there is nothing we can do to control the forces that be. And, we constantly remind ourselves that we can, that we indeed do have some control over some of these issues. How?
Recycle, Reuse and Review.
Recycle! Take advantage of your community's recycling programs. Glass can be melted down and used again. Many plastics can be melted down and re-purposed into long-term durable items such as decking materials, carpets, furniture, etc - without extensive use of additional petro-chemicals.
Reuse! We often re-use packaging materials when we mail orders. We also reuse it in our own packing of products as we go from show to show. Purchase products that can be re-used - glass for your food, cloth bags for your shopping, the blank side of your printer paper can be printed on again, countless little things can add up to a big energy savings.
Review! Think about your travel and shopping habits with an eye to energy savings. Plan your errands and bundle them. Buy local. We heard a statistic the other day that stated that fully two thirds of food costs are fuel related - fuel used by large agribusinesses to plant, harvest, feed livestock and transport products from hundreds of miles away. Buying locally usually means supporting the smaller farming business, and, ironically, translates into better and healthier food, because they are using far fewer (if any) petro-chemicals. If you can't get to a Farmer's market, try a local food co-op.
We realize that we are probably preaching to the choir, so to speak. We are quite interested in what you are doing to conserve and save - so, drop us a line! |
We Honour...
It has been a sad time for us at LovingScents - we have lost several dear friends.
We mourn and honour the loss of Isa Dollyhigh, her husband Jorge Santos, her dog Kivett and her mother Coleen Dollyhigh on Easter Saturday. The last time we saw Isa and Jorge was at happy birthday celebration. They were glowing, as usual! We miss all of their loving and gentle presences here among us.
We also mourn and honour the passing of Rio Watson. Another wise and gentle spirit, Rio passed on February 27th. We miss her courage and her smile.

Speaking of Australia...ANNOUNCING
A NEW ESSENTIAL OIL FROM AUSTRALIA...
FRAGONIA (Agonis fragrans)
While
attending the Association of International Aromatherapists conference in
October, I was introduced to an exciting new essential oil from Australia.
The scent is similar to Eucalyptus radiata with a hint of flowers and
citrus. Upon first inhalation of this soft,
clean, fresh and uplifting fragrance I felt revitalized! Then I was introduced to the origin, chemical
make-up, early studies and anecdotal experiences of this oil. My excitement grew!
Fragonia
is in the Myrtaceae family along with Tea tree, Cajeput, Niaouli, Eucalyptus
and Myrtle. This family is known to be
anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, tonic, immune system balancing, useful for
infections of the respiratory system and energizing. The
essential oil is steam distilled from the flowers of a lignotuberous shrub reaching
7-8 feet in height. The shrub grows in Australia and has erect flowering branches
with thick, rigid leaves and small clusters of white, 5 petalled flowers with a
pale pink center. Flowering typically
occurs between January and May.
General
Properties of this essential oil include:
antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal (Candida albicans), anti-inflammatory,
antiseptic, analgesic, expectorant, immune enhancement.
Cautions
& Contraindications: Fragonia is
non-toxic and non-irritating. According
to Daniel Penoel, MD, "Fragonia has the advantage of lending itself to
long term use, as it does not have any toxic or irritating molecule, including
with the treatment of children and infants.
Methods
of Use: very safe on the skin - can be
used diluted in massage oil or natural cream, in the bath, diffusion, steam
inhalation, spritzers, and compresses.
Color: clear
Consistency: thin
Aromatic
Strength: soft
Some
suggested uses: Candida albicans
(fungal), inflammation due to tissue injury or infection, muscle/joint pain,
chronic sinus infections, chronic respiratory conditions (such as chronic
bronchitis, emphysema, COPD), respiratory infections, respiratory congestion,
coughs associated with inflammation of the bronchi, bacterial tonsillitis, allergies
associated with yeast infections, low energy, impaired immune system, stress,
anxiety, depression, and sleep challenges. The
chemical constituents of this oil fall into 3 main functional groups: monoterpenes (39%), an oxide (32%), and
monoterpenols (29%).
+Monoterpenes tend to be antiseptic
(especially airborne bacteria), bactericidal, stimulating, analgesic, and expectorant.
+Oxide-1,8 cineole is a strong mucolytic -
thins mucous in respiratory infections.
+Monoterpenols tend to be gentle and very safe
to use, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, calming and tonic for the nervous system.
A very
interesting feature about this oil is that the three functional groups are in
near perfect balance creating a "Golden Triangle", the symbol of
balance and harmonization.
Some
experiences I have had or have been reported to me concerning the use of
Fragonia:
I met
an elderly man diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, chronic bronchitis, and
failure to thrive. He was on oxygen
almost 24 hours a day, and his blood oxygen level at 84. The first time we tried Fragonia, he inhaled it
for 3.5 minutes and his blood oxygen level climbed to 96. He has continued to use this oil for
approximately 3 months, and is now more alert, conversant, his appetite and food
consumption are greatly improved, and he is on oxygen only when sleeping.
A 14 year
old male with tonsillitis applied diluted Fragonia (2%-12 drops per ounce of
carrier oil) to his chest and both sides of his neck 3 times daily for 1
week. He experienced symptomatic relief
by next morning, and all signs of infection were gone in one week.
A 48 year
old man was despondent over the loss of his pet. He applied Fragonia to his shirt collar and
diffused it into the air during sleep. He
reported feeling much better the next day, and he continued to use it for 1
week to ease the grief and to help him acclimate to his life without his dear
friend.

A Book thought for you...
We recently read a book that you may find interesting:
Not Just a Pretty Face (The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry) by Stacy Malkan
This is an easy read, and shocking. Ms. Malkan looks at the cosmetics industry and reveals some industry secrets that every person should be aware of. Cosmetics aren't just for women - anyone who bathes or brushes their teeth uses cosmetic products. (And, yes, this industry does use petro-chemicals)
