Seventeen Shaker Heights High School students were named Semifinalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Only one public school in Ohio (Cincinnati Sycamore) had more, and only one school in Greater Cleveland (St. Ignatius) equaled Shaker's number.

They are: David Barach, Jared Beachy, Meredith Boyd, Alyssa Cohen, Alex Grossman-McKee, Nathan Langhinrichs, Thomas Neil, Lena Newman, Alison O'Connor, Allison Paetz, Abigail Pink, Susanna Pretzer, Scott Rownd, Daniel Strassfeld, Michael Triozzi, Robert White, and Julia Wilson. In addition, Katherine Foster and Harlan King have been named Semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program honoring the nation's top Black high school seniors. Semifinalists in both the National Merit and the National Achievement competitions are considered top candidates for admission and scholarships at highly selective colleges. Still to be announced are the names of Commended Students in the two programs.

The Shaker Schools Foundation presents acclaimed composer/pianist Jim Brickman (SHHS 1979) and vocalist Anne Cochran (SHHS 1977) in a special benefit concert on October 5. Proceeds will support the renovation of the High School's large auditorium. The School District has received a $100,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration to support the High School's new pre-engineering course. The FHA's Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Education Program was created to improve the preparation of students, particularly women and minorities, in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as they relate to

The District's commitment to acquaint students with the Chinese language and culture continues to grow. Two additional Chinese teachers, Liu Baohua and Yi Wen, have begun teaching basics of the Mandarin Chinese language and Chinese culture to students in grades 1 and 2 in all five K-4 buildings in Shaker. This year we have welcomed new families from Australia, China, Czech Republic, Egypt, England, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Norway, Philippines, Puerto Rico, South Korea, St. Thomas, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, and Uruguay.

"Making the Grade: Helping Our Kids Achieve," a documentary featuring several Shaker students and staff members, has received an Emmy from the Lower Great Lakes Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The quality of the public schools emerged as the top reason residents gave for moving to Shaker Heights in a survey released by the City this week.
