PLANNING AHEAD? Consult our online calendars. You'll find one-page calendars showing vacations, holidays, and other important dates all the way through 2008-09. The PTO calendar will be mailed in August to all families with children enrolled in the Shaker schools. Additional copies will be available for purchase at schools and the Administration Building for $6. Also on the Web: Required and recommended reading lists for the summer.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM: Caring Communities Organized for Education is sponsoring its 10th annual Summer Enrichment Program for Shaker students entering the 7th, 8th, or 9th grade. Core and specialty classes run from Tuesday, June 27, through Friday, July 28, at Shaker Heights Middle School. Classes take place between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Core classes include Pre-Algebra, English, Algebra, Creative Writing, African-American History, and Science, at $150 per subject. Specialty classes include Wealth Development, TV Production and Study Skills. All classes are led by experienced, certified teachers. Parents and guardians can register Saturday, June 24, from 10 am until noon at the Shaker Main Library, 2nd floor; or on Monday, June 26, beginning at 6:45 pm just prior to a special Parent Orientation in the Middle School cafeteria. Caring Communities is a proactive, volunteer parent group that helps families with students in the Shaker Heights School District with support through education and cultural activities. 2 WIN HISTORY LAURELS: Two students from Shaker Heights High School placed in the top 15 in their respective divisions during the National History Day competition, which concluded last Thursday at the University of Maryland. Mark Antal, a rising senior, was a finalist in the Research Paper division with his paper Jamming a Spoke in the Wheel: Dietrich Bonhoeffer?s Stand Against Hitler. His history teacher last year was Dann Parker. Rising junior Jaclyn Inglis reached the finals in the Individual Documentary division for her video Answering the Cries: Child Labor Reformers of the Progressive Era. Her history teacher was Tim Mitchell.

RELIVE COMMENCEMENT 2006: The viewing schedule for Shaker Heights High School's 2006 commencement ceremony has been extended by two days. The ceremony may be viewed on Wide Open West cable channel 18 at 10:00 am, 1:00 pm, 5:00 pm, and 8:00 pm through Sunday, June 25. DVDs of the ceremony may be borrowed from the Shaker Heights Public Library.

CHANGE IN PERSONNEL: Lisa E. Howell, currently an assistant principal at the High School, will be the District's new personnel administrator. Ms. Howell earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from John Carroll University and a master's degree in educational administration from Ashland University. She has been an English teacher at Euclid and Warrensville high schools, interim principal at the Halle Learning Center, and a small school principal at Rhodes High School in Cleveland. She joined the Shaker staff in 2004 and has demonstrated outstanding abilities in project management, evaluation, and interpersonal communication, among other areas. Ms. Howell is currently participating in the First Ring Leadership Academy. Ms. Howell will succeed Bill Trost, who is retiring in October after a distinguished career in Shaker as a teacher, assistant principal, and personnel administrator.

YOUNG SCIENTISTS SHINE: Shaker Heights Middle School students racked up loads of science awards this spring. At the Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair, seven of the nine Shaker entrants won second place awards in their respective categories: Alison Chaing (Biology), Samantha Goldfarb (Engineering), Nora Harris (Biology) Rebecca Kimmelfield (Behavioral Science), Chris Piraino (Engineering), David Stahl (Health/Medicine.) and Pranjal Vachaspati (Physics). Tim Dixon received a medal and a ribbon for a third place in Engineering and Tori Goldfarb received a ribbon for Honorable Mention in Engineering. Shaker was named Most Outstanding Middle School at the Western Reserve District Science Fair, with six of the eight team members earning Superior awards and qualifying for the state competition. Participating at the district level were Allison Chiang, Nicholas DeFelice, Nora Harris*, Rebecca Kimmelfield*, Robin Meiksins*, Greg Phillip*, and Kevin Plautz*. Those marked with an asterisk qualified for state competition. And at State Science Day at The Ohio State University, Robin Meiksins, Greg Phillip, David Stahl, and Pranjal Vachaspati earned Superior awards, with Greg placing first in Behavioral Sciences and David third in Health/Medicine.
