The Shaker Heights Schools will open their doors to District residents as students showcase their musical, theatrical, artistic, and academic talents during this year's Shakerfest celebration, April 5 through May 26. Shakerfest, an annual event, will include such activities as school open houses; student art shows; band, orchestra, and choral concerts; theatre ensemble performances; displays and demonstrations of student projects; and kindergarten welcome parties. Check the Shakerfest schedule for a complete listing of activities, including times, dates, and locations. Join us for the 20th annual Shaker Heights Evening of Jazz Concert on Wednesday, April 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium. The concert will include the sixth grade jazz band, seventh grade jazz band, eighth grade jazz band, high school jazz band, High School jazz combo, and High School jazz ensemble. This year?s guest soloist is Joe Miller, trumpet. Free and open to the public. History buffs won?t want to miss A Night for History Day, an exposition of the papers, documentaries, performances, and displays created by Shaker students in preparation for district competition at CWRU. A Night for History Day takes place from 7:00 to 9:15 p.m. on April 5 at the High School, in four venues: Small Auditorium, Large Auditorium, Egress, and Room 129. Shaker Heights High School is headed for the national round of the Federal Reserve Challenge, a monetary policy competition sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank. Shaker won the District Championship in the second round on March 27. The team will travel to Washington, D.C., on April 30 ? May 1 to compete for the national championship against teams from other Federal Reserve Districts. Shaker Heights High School social studies teacher Diana Jones coaches the Shaker team, composed of Morgan Grossman-McKee, Brandon Hemmelgarn, Kelly Jackson, Shan Tie, and Diana Wang, with David Coon as alternate. In eight years of competition Shaker has won seven division (first round) titles and five district titles. In four appearances so far at national competition, Shaker teams have made it to the semifinals twice. More info. Shaker Heights won the high school state fencing championship on March 26. The Shaker men's team captured first place and the Shaker women's team tied for first with Dublin Coffman High School. In individual results, in men's foil competition: Shaker's Stephen Cabrera took 2nd place and David Coscarelli 3rd place. In men's epee, David Coscarelli took 3rd place. In women's saber, Shaker fencers Carolyn Stange and Akosua Kernizan tied for 3rd place. The Shaker Heights Latin Club members have done it again, returning victorious from the Ohio Junior Classical League competition. The team members are: seniors Andrew Kulinski and Helen Morgenstern; juniors Stephanie Goldfarb, Natalie King, Carolyn Stange, Katie Stamm, and Anthony Lanese; sophomores Susanna Pretzer, Katie Ryan, Cyrus Taylor, and Max Rothman; freshmen Katie Crowley, Allison Lanese, Michael Cowett, Melissa Freilich, and Alex Almasan; and 8th graders Chris Piraino, Pranjal Vachaspati, Miriam Chelimsky, Samantha Goldfarb, and Victoria Goldfarb. In addition, Stephanie Goldfarb became the first student from Shaker Heights to be elected president of the OJCL. Michael Cowett has been appointed Northeast Ohio Gubernator, and he will be in charge of co-ordinating the activities of all the Latin Clubs in the area. More info.
