We're pleased to share more good news about the accomplishments of Shaker students. On March 16, 2006, a team of students from Shaker Heights High School won the division championship of the Federal Reserve Challenge, an economics competition sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Teacher Diana Jones coaches the winning Shaker team of Morgan Grossman-McKee, Brandon Hemmelgarn, Kelly Jackson, Shan Tie, and Diana Wang. The team will compete for the District Championship on March 27. Shaker has been competing in the Fed Challenge for eight years, winning the division championship seven times, the district championship four times. In four appearances at the national competition, Shaker has made it to the semifinals twice.The High School Academic Decathlon team earned the highest team score for mathematics and economics in the state competition at Hiram College on March 25. The team consisted of Katy Fishman, Benjamin Heide, Nathan Langhinrichs, Christopher Murphy, Tejas Nandurkar, Samhita Pennathur, Bradley Ross, Daniel Strassfeld, Shan Tie, Diana Wang, and Patrick White. The following students earned gold medals: Diana Wang (mathematics); Shan Tie (mathematics and interview); and Daniel Strassfeld (interview). Shan Tie also received a Certificate of Achievement as one of the top overall scorers. The team?s coaches are High School Spanish teachers Les Foote and Jose Perez. Mark Antal, a Shaker junior, has won the Earthwatch Student Challenge Award, a scholarship that will enable him to participate in scientific field research this summer. Over 300 students applied; 80 were selected nationwide. Mark will be at the Chevelon Ruin in Arizona, a Hopi archaelogical site. The project is entitled "The Analysis of Structural Burning in an Ancient Hopi Village." The Shaker Bands turned in outstanding performances at the recent Ohio Music Educators Association competition. Both the Wind Ensemble (class AA) and Symphonic Band (class A) received "I" ratings from every judge and both Concert Winds (class C) and Concert Band (class C) received "II" ratings overall. These top ratings are reserved for only the finest bands. The Shaker Heights High School A Cappella Choirs, the Shaker Heights Symphonic Orchestra, and the First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland Chancel Choir and soloists join forces to perform music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in celebration of his 250th birthday. The program will include selections from his Symphony in D Major (?Haffner?), No. 35, and his unfinished masterpiece, Requiem. The program will conclude with his last completed work, Ave Verum Corpus. The performance begins at 7:00 p.m., March 29, 2006, at First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland, Fairmount Boulevard at Eaton Road, Shaker Heights. Free admission. The Middle School's Junior Model United Nations Club excelled in its first-ever trip to the Junior Ohio Model United Nations competition in Columbus. Shaker's three teams brought home one Outstanding Nation Award, a runner-up award in the talent division, a runner-up award for individual peace essay, and three Outstanding ratings for written resolutions. Representing Ireland were Samantha Goldfarb, Victoria Goldfarb, Maeve Willis, Callum Orr, and Ayush Sood; representing Lebanon were Sebastian Wocial, Diane Ryu, Georgia Haddad, Maeve Metheny, Emma Bresnahan, and Tyler Tevis; representing Rwanda were Hannah Thompson, Rachel Leonard, Murphy Metheny, and Bridget Mearns.
