Spring 2006

Newsletter

Springtime Greetings!!

It's Springtime here at Fairy Cove Silkworks! The New Year has brought us wonderful changes we are so excited to share with you. Many that I write here in this Newsletter have seen Fairy Cove from its earliest beginnings, which marks two years on the web this past March.

Fairy Cove has amazingly, magically... moved! We relocated home and hearth this last February. Living alone for the last two years as a home and web working mom in rural country has been a strengthening experience for me. I sent our four children (now ages 14, 12, 9, 5) to school last fall for the first time ever, which has only continued to broaden and educate them as they resiliently and passionately experience a whole new found world. I am grateful for the time I have taken with my family through the years, and so blessed to have had this creative opportunity supported by so many others in community and commerce.

A word about commerce. I thank you for the joy it brings all of us to share in commerce together. For in commerce, we create community, and that is always so worthwhile. We raise our prices this Spring, once again, regretfully, and yet, knowing it is what we must do to continue to do this wonderful thing of Silk and still care for our families adequately. We thank you for your support!

To console you, we offer a Coupon Code good through all of April, discounting your entire order 10%.  And always with free shipping.   At checkout, Just type in: SILKOTIC

So breeze in and see what's fresh on our Sale Page now...

We so look forward to sharing with you our passions this coming year..... Our love of fiber, color, and connecting with people! I look forward to seeing you soon, and servicing you better.  Keep your eyes out for changes... Spring is most definitely in the air!!

MEDIEVAL GOTHIC RAINBOWS have been a secret we've been keeping to ourselves for awhile. These magical rainbows are very toned down and mellow. Gothic rainbows are overdyed and therefore have more subtlety. Appeals to the more refined palette and are truly extraordinary. Children respond really well to them, also, as they appear more wizardly and regal! Consider using a Jumbo Silk to drape and tuck flat across the breadth of your bed while you enjoy the luxury of relaxing on silk. Don't forget the candles!

Fun Silk Trivia...

Do you know what all those silk terms mean?
Silk can be confusing to understand, as it was originally crafted in China, but has much influence from other cultures that have contributed to the many evolutions of silk production. The playsilk 'industry standard' is called 'Habotai', an evenly woven, typically somewhat sheer silk, which comes in varying weights and qualities.

Here are a some tidbits and a couple of International contributions to silk terminology:

  • Momme (pronounced "mummy") is a Japanese unit of weight used to measure and describe silk fabrics. Momme is usually referred to as "momme weight" it is a unit of weight for measuring quality of woven silk. The higher the momme, the heavier the fabric.

  • 'Habotai' translates from Japanese as "Soft as Down"

  • 'Damask jacquard' is a weave that is raised on the front as the opposite is on the back, from French contributed Jacquard loom, invented in 1801 by Joseph Marie Jacquard (click for cool photos)

  • Groundbreaking scientific research! Artificial silk using genetically engineered proteins!

About Our Silks
Our 'standard' silk is a sturdy 8mm Habotai 'China' silk, though our sarongs come in a 10mm weight. Some playsilks are standardly offered at 5mm, which are more sheer and floaty in feeling, and also more delicate and less durable. We use a luxurious 16mm Habotai in our linings for our upcoming Slings and other bedding and decor, which makes habotai almost feel like a satin.
