harvesting wood from our 4 acre farm & woods, this set is

Dan because he has always been an engineer... construction
and design being his strong points ~ Legos straying from

NATURAL DYED SILKS...
Yep, you read it here first! We are busy gathering
and experimenting with our abundantly rich flora here in
NW Oregon. We hope to begin offering a larger variety of
hand-dyed scarves this fall. Be on the watch for rich,
gentle hues brought forth from nature to enrich your
environment.
ARTICLE: SUMMER PLAY WITH YOUR SILKS!
SILK & SUMMER PLAY ~
Silks love to play outside. Really they do!! Storing your play silks in a wicker basket inside your
home makes it easy to carry them out for hours of fun
and play in the yard! Teaching children routine
encourages responsibility. When we consistently offer an
easy way to care for treasured items, it encourages them
to be responsive. So, bring that basket of silk out to
play ~ they love to flutter and play in the breeze!
Silk play out-of-doors has a different type of quality
than that found inside. With less barriers to their
movements, children discover the joy of running with
fluttering silk and explore gravity.
Here are 8 ideas we concocted for playing with your silks
outside:
1) Play Hide & Seek (or is that Hide & Silk??) Take turns hiding a small silk somewhere in the yard. For
younger children, leave a bright slip of color peeking
out. For older children, consider using
DIVINE DRESSUPS,
our wonderful Rainbow Set of 12 Mini-Silks to make this
more challenging.
2) Blind Mans Bluff Use a dark colored silk to tie
onto the person who is 'it'. The blindfolded person needs
to find another player by following the sounds, cues, and
giggles.
3) Play Butterflies Use 36" or 45" silks and make
them into wings, holding a bit of silk in the hand as the
children alight from flower to flower. Imagine the Sun
warming your wings and what it must feel like to feed
nectar and drink water delicately from a hollow rock.
4) Silk on a Stick Find a great stick or
dowel and make it
into a magical wand by adding a knotted silk onto the
end. Also useful is tying the silk on the way the Hobos
did.... to carry a meal or other. Kids love to be taught
how to tie knots and the like. And parents love sticks
being put to good use!
5) Go on a Royal Journey...ending in a feast, of
course. Don your favorite silk cape, or other regal
looking silks and travel in a procession over to the
nearest shade tree! Create a memory by having a
refreshing iced-tea party in all your finery.
6) Play Parachute! Remember that game from P.E.
when you were young? The one you could never get enough
of? With as few as 2 people, you can recreate the same
games. Simply use one of our
Jumbo Play Canopies! Everybody grabs an edge and make up a song to go with. On a cue or phrase, everybody tucks themselves into the
inside of the silk.
7) Play House Together Wash all your silks outside in a
basin, using a mild soap, dish soap or hair shampoo will do
just fine. Assign one child to wash & rinse, and
another to hang them on the line to dry. The kids love
activities like this that are real-life skills, but
involving their own possessions. Silks look lovely hanging
on the line, brightly colored and floating this way and
that. They will only take a few minutes to dry when
hot! Feel free to iron them liberally with steam at your
leisure. Or not. Kids don't mind wrinkled silks,
really!
8) Dance with the Wind A large canopy will provide
a fabulous dance partner. If the wind is especially
billowy, you might want to consider a quiet game where you
and your child's movements mimic the wind. Perhaps begin
with a quiet breathing exercise and going inward. Then
stand with a silk and match the fluttery movements the
wind creates.
Silk has the most amazing qualities when coupled with
Children,
Sunlight,
and
Breeze. And if for some reason,
your silks are left out in a brief storm, or collecting
the overnight dew ~ don't worry! Just toss them in the
dryer for a few moments with a dry towel to help absorb or
simply hang them on the line.
