How we're spending
our summer...
Instead of writing an article
this month, I thought I would share some of our summer
activities ~ I so often have wonderful email chats with
our customers and I thought I would give you an
opportunity to know me better. When I am not doing all
these fun activities, I have the wonderful privilege of
growing a business through the patronage of dedicated
customers like you!
On Summer Solstice we hosted a beautiful Bonfire (our burn
pile!) with close friends and a Dessert Potluck. The kids
had wonderful time playing Ghost Tag and other fun games
in the dark. It was a lovely reminder to remember to keep
life spontaneous and fun ~ it isn't often we have a
Bonfire on a Monday night!
Last week we picked blueberries several times at the local
organic blueberry farm, in addition to plums and cherries
at a friends overgrown orchard, which we cheerfully call
the 'Fruit Cocktail Orchard' it is so packed with so many
varieties of plums and cherries. I youthfully (but not
gracefully!) climbed a tree, carefully balancing my
weight in my eagerness to collect the deep black
cherries. We are freezing, canning, drying, and making
jams and ice cream at every opportunity. The kids have set
a comical goal of making ice cream with every fruit we
pick this summer! So far, we have made strawberry,
cherry, and blueberry. Next will be plum, raspberry,
marionberry, and peach. We are considering trying the
fall fruits, too... apple and pear ice cream sounds
delicious to us! Daniel dutifully mans the ice cream
maker and our neighbor provides us weekly with fresh milk
that is thick with cream risen to the top.
Our vegetable garden and young fruit trees grow happily,
though I haven't had as much time to tend is as in the
past due to the business keeping me so busy! Thankfully,
potatoes volunteer at every opportunity, and, at the very
least, we will have bumper crops of those. I plan to
harvest hops this fall from the garden to offer calming
Dream Pillows.
In between foraging, feeding, and stashing the fruits of
summer, the kids and I are spending a fair bit of time at
the gym, getting in shape (Pilates & Weights), teaching
young Hannah and Drew to swim. We have a goal for
Hannah, who is 7, to be swimming so that she may join her
eldest siblings on Swim Team next fall. We are also
getting caught up on many odd jobs required by living on a
small farm ~ maintenance and repairs. I am so grateful
for a strong boy and pleased that my children have the
opportunity to learn by doing in addition to their other
homeschooling activities.
Recently we acquired a white floppy-eared Nubian Goat,
named Daisy. She has brought joy to our lives and
challenges, too. My petite daughter, Rachael, who is 10,
absolutely adores Daisy, but is quite challenged by
getting her to move as desired. Rachael eagerly awaits
the fall when we can breed Daisy and anticipate babies in
the Spring. My eldest son Daniel (12) and I have been
faced with the rigors of goat fencing. Until the goat
fencing is complete, we have been moving Daisy on a picket
to wherever the browse seems most lush! With our 4 acre
land, we have perfect browse for goats, all kinds of small
woodland shrubby stuff. Once she got loose (she is a goat
after all, you know?) and she downed 1/2 of one our
blueberry bushes in a few short moments! Our Muscovy
ducks hatched four beautiful ducklings just this week and
are causing a big stir in the barn and are a joy to
behold.
Shortly we will be on vacation to Primitive Skills Camp
for the better part of a week (July 19-23rd) , where we
will learn firemaking, toolmaking, weaving, and many other
useful early civilization skills. We especially look
forward to the time sharing the company of the diverse
community that will gather for this camp, enriching and
broadening our experiences. We hope to have very little
delay with business while on vacation, aiming for
uninterrupted service to you, our valued customer.
My goals this summer are to Work Hard & Play Hard, living
life richly and to the fullest.
Have a great summer ~ and blessings to you and yours!
