For instance, if you have never seen a tree before, then God would not use a tree as a sign for you, because you would relate it as a "sign". Your God speaks to you in your own language or symbols for your to understand His message to you. The more dialogue you have with God the more communication grows between the two of you. When asking God for a sign be specific, this creates in your own awareness, what you are to watch or be in awareness for, this then enters your conscious and subsconscious mind, so when the sign appears you will be aware or receive your answer.
