From the General Manager

Our February fund drive is the engine that drives the station through the spring and summer and into the fall.  Historically the largest fund drive of the year, what we raise now makes the difference in paying our bills at the end of the summer.

Please do give as generously as you can.  Consider doubling your contribution to KPFA this year.

As you know, although we broke even last year, after several years of losses KPFA has no reserves.  We need to rebuild those rainy day funds, and do everything we can to rebuild our infrastructure, upgrade our web capabilities, increase our reach into the communities we serve -- and bring you the issues you care about, as always, only more so.

I urge our whole community --listeners, board, and staff -- to work together to move KPFA into a position to make these improvements.

This is an important election year.  KPFA and Pacifica will be covering the issues that matter to the 99% -- not just the tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum horse races.  This includes continuing throrough coverage of the ongoing Occupation movement as well as other existing and growing peoples' movements.

With your generosity this great radio station can and will not only tough out the hard times, but rise and shine as a beacon in these dark times.

Sincerely,

Andrew Leslie Phillips

Coming out Feb 15, 2012

Redefining Black Power Book Cover

In its first book project, the Pacifica Radio Archives has teamed up with City Lights Books to produce Redefining Black Power: Reflections on the State of Black America.

With contributions from Michelle Alexander (The New Jim Crow), Van Jones (former White House Green advisor and President of 'Rebuild The Dream') and Dr Vincent Harding (founder of Veterans of Hope and script writer for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ), Redefining Black Power addresses some of the key issues for black America; mass incarceration, media portrayal, the role of black leadership, democratic participation and economic disparity.

The Pacifica Radio Archives and the Pacifica radio network will be doing a series of special panel discussions across the country throughout February, including:

Wednesday, February 8, in San Francisco at the Museum of the African Diaspora & Thursday, Feb 9, at Marcus Books in Oakland.

Info on the Recall Vote and the Issues
We still hope to have an on-air recall debate later this month after the fund drive with a neutral moderator where both sides can be heard.  Tracy Rosenberg has confirmed her willingness to participate.  We are waiting for confirmation from the recall proponents.  Stay tuned for more information.

In the meanwhile, you can find information on the issues pro and con by clicking on the web banners for the two websites below.

Johnny Otis
December 8, 1921 - January 17, 2012

Johnny Otis photo

Johnny Otis, the pioneering rhythm and blues singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and former KPFA dj passed away on Tuesday, January 17th. He was 90 years old.

Born white, the son of Greek immigrant parents, he was raised in a predominantly black neighborhood in Northern California in the 1920's. During that time, Otis decided as a youth that he'd rather be black. Otis led a life in music in which he created the 1958 hit "Willie And The Hand Jive" which would later be the theme song to his Pacifica radio programs both at KPFK in Los Angeles and later at KPFA. He had a deep connection to black culture that helped him discover artists such as Etta James, Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, Hank Ballard and Little Esther Phillips. He was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994. He continued to lead a big band Rn'B, Jazz, Soul, Gospel and Roots-Rock revue until his health declined.

He started with Pacifica at KPFK in the 1980's and later moved his program to KPFA around 1986. His popular Saturday morning music program was among the highest rated music programs on KPFA. His last programs were broadcast from the Power Station brewery in Sebastopol. He stopped hosting and producing radio due to poor health in 2005.

On Saturday, January 28th, Tom Mazzolini presented a two hour special on the career of Johnny Otis. Joining him were Johnny Otis' longtime manager Terry Gould. Also featured were Johnny's two on air assistents from the KPFA years - George Curtis and Tom McElheny. Plus Carlos Zilcita from Johnny's Monday Night Blues Class at Vista College. Carlos talked about Johnny's musicianship and history in Los Angeles. It was entertaining and informative.

If you missed it, the program will be available in the archives until Feb 11th here.

Forthcoming Poetry Volume by Dennis J. Bernstein

Dennis Bernstein Book CoverSpecial Ed
Voices from a Hidden Classroom

Coming February 8th from New York Quarterly Books.

Recommendations:

"Special Ed is about daily life under the siege of poverty, racism, and class warfare. In these stunning, understated poems, these poems unafraid to name the darkest facts of our world and yet continually informed with compassion, we find ourselves in Rilke's world of beauty and terror. To depict with love, as Bernstein does, is indeed to transform, the way a shattered guitar and broken glass are transformed by the kids in the special ed classroom into art and jewels."

-Anita Barrows, PhD, poet, child psychologist, translator (with Joanna Macy) of Rainer Maria Rilke

"Dennis Bernstein is a hero to me because of his dedicated, unflinching reporting of real news on Flashpoints, at KPFA in Berkeley, California. But his fearless pursuit of the truth about what is happening in our rapidly transforming world did not prepare me for the beauty, depth, not-one-word-mislaid perception of this amazing book. Each word, each line, each thought has a weight, a texture, a surprise all its own. With its moving preface, in which Dennis shares his own struggles as a young child with special needs, Special Ed: Voices from a Hidden Classroom is that unusual gift literature can be: We are connected to humanity in ways we might never have even considered or imagined before. Above all it is art turned to us through the eyes of love."

-Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, author of the Color Purple

Dennis Bernstein

Dennis also has recently published articles at Consortium News including "Silencing Donohue and Anti-War Voices" and "Banning Books in Tuscon."
