The combination of Fullerton's 65-year experience in carbide round tool manufacturing with the expertise offered by the St. Louis research lab yielded a design which began with eccentric relief, variable space flutes, based on a superior substrate and advanced coating. The first blueprint provided us with an exciting new end mill that we felt confident could be tweaked to perform well in the target market. The first experimental tools were a success out of the gate! Thus, the Fantom was born.
The first priority was hi feed milling for roughing and finishing, but we soon realized that we could also slot and pocket at 1x diameter consistently. For finishing in titanium, the Fantom will run at 400 SFM. With a 1-inch diameter at .004 FPT, slotting and pocketing must be reduced to 50% S&F.
Because of the eccentric relief, the Fantom holds a keen cutting edge for strong tool life. Therefore, Cycle Time x Tool Life x Quality Surface Finish = Major Cost Savings and less bench time of polishing to clean up mill marks.
Interestingly, the Fullerton team took the Fantom into automotive die/mold applications and found that these end mills offer superior performance in a wide range of materials: A2, D2, H-13, cast iron, ductile, stainless steel, etc. Performance is still excellent whether these metals are in hard or soft state.

Fullerton is currently working on advancing the performance of the Fantom product line with testing edge preps. The company has purchased Otec honing equipment after extensive testing to prove this would be a major enhancement, making the Fantom product line even better by ensuring more consistent performance. As a company, Fullerton always strives to understand the needs of the market and come up with ways to continuously improve its product offerings.
