Wind Farms are gaining attention as an energy source that requires no fuel, produces no pollution, and is virtually inexhaustible. At the end of 2010, worldwide nameplate capacity of wind-powered generators was 197 gigawatts (GW). Wind turbines are linked together for operation and energy monitoring. This poses a unique set of challenges since a wind farm can span large distances with typical locales posing electrical interference, extreme temperatures, dust, moisture, and vibration.

It is imperative to utilize rugged networking devices that support long distance, reliable transmission capabilities. Keeping data protected while communicating from the base to the top of each wind turbine, and between turbines, can best be achieved through fiber optic Ethernet connections. At the same time, topological requirements and limitations that are acceptable for conventional networks become intolerable when designing communications between wind turbines that span vast distances.

Kyland managed Ethernet switches with 3 fiber ports protect In, Out and Up communications in the wind farm application can handle redundancy in a flexible ring topology via Kyland DT-Ring and IEC62439-6/DRP protocols, making it ideal for establishing a reliable yet cost-effective solution over a widely distributed wind farm network. Switches convert copper Ethernet to optical fiber for highly reliable, EMI immune data transmission.

Solution

wind power topology

In the wind farm automation system, we need to monitor the working status of the wind turbine and the quality of the energy generated. This includes the direction of wind turbine, the angle of the turbine blade, the vibration of the turbine tower, and the power of the energy etc. The communication network has two parts, one is between wind turbines and control center, the other is inside the wind turbine. Kyland 5 port unmanaged KIEN1005A and 3 port media convertor KOM300A can be used inside the wind turbine to collect all the data and send it out through one fiber port.

In the cabinet under each wind turbine, one Kyland 9 port managed KIEN7009/ SICOM3009 with 3 fiber ports can be connected to the switch inside the turbine using one fiber port. The other 2 fiber ports, one in one out, enable all the turbines to be connected with a layer 3 24+4G port managed SICOM6424SM in the control center into a ring topology using Kyland DT-Ring or IEC62439-6/DRP. Through this fiber ring topology, the whole distributed wind turbine control system is established with high redundancy and reliability.
