What is making my computer so slow?
Computers become slow over time. This is a fact of technological life. What are the various causes of the slowdown and how can we stop or mitigate them? Let's take a look.

1. Spyware or virus.

Click on the wrong link in an email or on a website and blammo, you've been spywared. What this means is that you have been unwittingly lured into installing a program on your computer that has behind it malicious intent. The program may be watching every website you go to on the net and reporting that information back to a marketing company for sale later to whoever wants to purchase it. The spyware may be logging every key you hit on your keyboard and sending that to the Russian mafia. In fact a spyware infection can be programmed to do anything someone sitting in front of your computer can do including download more spyware. One common effect of spyware infections is that they slow down computers. The way to prevent yourself from being infected is to follow my best practices when using a computer. A few of them are:

A. Use a browser other than internet explorer

Internet Explorer is the most compatible browser and because of this and its ubiquity it is also the most vulnerable to attack from spyware and viruses. If you want to add a layer of protection to your web surfing use either
Firefox or Google Chrome. Both of these browsers are safer than Internet Explorer and also have added functionality that makes them more enjoyable to use. If one of the sites you regularly visit is not compatible with Firefox or Chrome use IE to access it, but when you are done and want to surf elsewhere do so with Firefox or Chrome.

B. Don't install anything on your computer to make it run better or faster.

Your computer's operating system is like a tower of Jenga blocks. It is organized to run perfectly if not disturbed or upset in any way. If you install an automated system that starts altering system files or registry entries don't be surprised if random error messages begin cropping up on your screen. When it comes to your operating system and the maintenance thereof  less is definitely more.

C. Use good judgment.

Everyone asks me what I use to defend my computer expecting that I'll tell them about some super secret CIA antivirus program only seven people know about. In reality I use AVG Free Antivirus, the Firefox and Chrome browsers and am behind a wireless router which acts as a hardware firewall. That's pretty much it. Why does my computer work perfectly? Because of what I don't do. I don't click on links if I don't know where they are taking me. I don't open email attachments unless I know what they are. Not who they are from, but what exactly the attachment is. I don't try to download free music, games, movies, screen savers etc. I don't install any program on my computer unless I know what it is, that it is legitimate and that I need it. If you do like I do you will experience far fewer problems going forward.

Removing a spyware infection usually calls for a complete format of the hard drive and a reinstallation of the operating system. This can be a hefty job, so it is far better to avoid contracting an infection in the first place.

2. Lack of physical memory or insufficiently powerful processor.

"Yeah, but I don't do much with my computer so I don't need a fast pone, right?"  You may not need a car that goes a hundred miles an hour, but odds are you need one that goes a sixty miles an hour reliably. For a car to be able to go sixty miles an hour reliably it must be able to go to a hundred miles an hour at least in theory. Your computer is no different. You may not need to  launch the space shuttle or play a high end video game, but if your computer does not have at least enough memory and processor speed to run its operating system then boot and shutdown times will be slow as will the opening of programs and their functioning. When you purchase a computer make sure you know the recommended system requirements of your operating system and of all of the software you intend to use. If you do not know how to get the information I can help you find out. Underpowered computer systems can leave you on the shoulder of the information superhighway. Adding memory to a computer can sometimes extend its lifespan and give it greater speed.

3. Operating system corruption

Over time the files that make up your operating system get lost and corrupted. The registry which is a database of all of your computer's settings becomes filled with entries which should have been deleted, but were not. It also retains more and more corrupted entries and certain entries go missing. In order to rectify this about every two years or whenever your computer gets so slow that it is difficult to use I can format your hard drive and reinstall your operating system. After that it should run as well as it did on day one.

If your computer is running slowly feel free to give me a call.

The new Priority One plan from Bensman Home Computer Repair
Bensman Home Computer Repair is now offering a new way to pay for computer repair. Instead of paying an hourly fee for a repair when you need it we now offer the option of paying less money and spreading that cost out over twelve months. We call it Priority One.

If you sign up for Priority One service I will sell you six hours of computer repair for the price of four. You then pay for those hours over the course of twelve months. Priority One customers receive a significant discount on computer repair and at the same time are able to budget that repair cost more easily.

That's right, just twelve easy payments of $24.95 plus tax gets you six hours of computer repair you can use any time in the next twelve months. If you don't use all of your hours in a given year you can roll an hour over to the following year up to three times. It really is the most sensible way to budget and pay for home computer repair.

Possible uses for your hours might include hooking up a new printer, setting up a wireless home network, virus removal or any other home computer repair related task you would need. My service does not change with the Priority One plan. You would call me as you usually do, schedule an appointment as you usually do and I come take care of the issue as I usually do. The difference is that with the Priority One plan at the end of the job you Do Not Write Me A Check.

If you sign up now you get six hours for twelve payments of $24.95 a month for twelve months plus tax. If you wait until you have a problem before you sign up I will offer a fifty percent discount on that days work if you then sign up to be a Priority One customer.

Computer problems are difficult enough without wondering how to pay for them. With Priority One your life just got a little easier.

If anyone out there would like to sign up to become a Priority One customer or if you just have any questions about it give me a ring. Below I have included the contract for your information.

Repair Services Contract

I agree to pay twelve equal payments of 24.95 plus sales tax per month to Bensman Home Computer Repair.

In return I shall receive six hours of home computer repair.

If any of the hours are unused in any twelve month period the subscriber may roll one hour over to the next year up to a total of three hours.

If a subscriber uses more than his six hours in one repair session or uses all of his hours up before his twelve month period has expired he may pay for the remainder of the session at an hourly rate of $70.00 or he may opt to pay the remainder of the outstanding twelve month period's fees and thereby immediately extend his service by six hours and twelve months.

If an unsubscribed client needs service and then wishes to subscribe to my service a fifty percent discount will be given on the initial service up to $100.00, provided the client then subscribes for twelve months of the service at $24.95 a month.

Service is to be calculated at a one hour minimum charge with each subsequent fifteen minute increment being charged as one half hour and each half hour increment being charged as one full hour.

Service is to be provided at the convenience of the subscriber and as the provider's schedule permits.

The service will be an automatically recurring charge to the client's credit card unless the client cancels the service. At the end of a twelve month period the client will automatically receive 6 more hours of computer repair plus one hour from the previous year if one has been unused up to a total of three hours.

A subscriber may cancel the service at any time. At time of cancellation the balance of his subscription must be paid. If he cancels his subscription he still retains the balance of his hours until the twelve months following his initial subscription sign up date.

If a subscriber cancels without notification the subscriber is responsible for any and all fees charged to Bensman Home Computer Repair by the subscriber's credit card company or bank.

This rate does not include costs for parts. Those are to be paid for by the client in addition to the monthly contract fee.

Request to cancel must be provided in writing or via email.

I have read, understand and agree to all of the above.

Some bugs are forever.
Don't want to freak you out too badly, but it seems that there is so much legacy equipment out there that a lot of companies that make equipment that runs important, even crucial, systems have bugs that they feel are not cost effective enough for them to fix because these systems are at the end of their product life cycle.

I love movies, but I hate the MPAA.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big fan of movies. I am just as much against the Motion Picture Association of America. They tried to wreck the internet with SOPA and when the public would not stand for it they ginned up a counter attack this time they are calling it CISPA, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act of 2011 (H.R. 3523). I urge everyone within the sound of my digital voice to contact their representatives to tell them that the internet is working fine and that they need to resist the MPAA's attempts to cripple it just so they can sell everyone blu-ray discs at twenty five dollars a piece.
