What to do with old tech.
Everyone has that odd tech item that has outlived its usefulness. What can be done with these things? It turns out plenty. Here are some options for dealing with tech items other than just pitching them in the trash:

1. Repurpose.  Got an extra pair of computer speakers that have no use? Attach them to an ipod shuffle and stick them on a kitchen counter. Whammo, instant music while you cook. Got an old PC that's functioning a bit too slowly for you and is too old to repair? stick it in a kid's room for them to play around with. Got a bunch of cables that you have no clue what to do with? Put them in a box and save them. With all the new technology that's constantly coming out the odds are a spare USB cable will come in handy.

2. Repair. If a device is broken check with a qualified repair tech and see if repairing it might be cheaper than getting a new one. For example Nintendo will repair any broken Wii regardless of what is wrong with it for a flat fee of $85.00.

3. Recycle. In Memphis you can take any tech item to the Shelby County Household Hazardous Waste Facility on 6305 Haley Road. They are open Tuesday and Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The new Priority One plan from Bensman Home Computer Repair
Bensman Home Computer Repair is now offering a new way to pay for computer repair. Instead of paying an hourly fee for a repair when you need it we now offer the option of paying less money and spreading that cost out over twelve months. We call it Priority One.

If you sign up for Priority One service I will sell you six hours of computer repair for the price of four. You then pay for those hours over the course of twelve months. Priority One customers receive a significant discount on computer repair and at the same time are able to budget that repair cost more easily.

That's right, just twelve easy payments of $24.95 plus tax gets you six hours of computer repair you can use any time in the next twelve months. If you don't use all of your hours in a given year you can roll an hour over to the following year up to three times. It really is the most sensible way to budget and pay for home computer repair.

Possible uses for your hours might include hooking up a new printer, setting up a wireless home network, virus removal or any other home computer repair related task you would need. My service does not change with the Priority One plan. You would call me as you usually do, schedule an appointment as you usually do and I come take care of the issue as I usually do. The difference is that with the Priority One plan at the end of the job you Do Not Write Me A Check.

If you sign up now you get six hours for twelve payments of $24.95 a month for twelve months plus tax. If you wait until you have a problem before you sign up I will offer a fifty percent discount on that days work if you then sign up to be a Priority One customer.

Computer problems are difficult enough without wondering how to pay for them. With Priority One your life just got a little easier.

If anyone out there would like to sign up to become a Priority One customer or if you just have any questions about it give me a ring. Below I have included the contract for your information.

Repair Services Contract

I agree to pay twelve equal payments of 24.95 plus sales tax per month to Bensman Home Computer Repair.

In return I shall receive six hours of home computer repair.

If any of the hours are unused in any twelve month period the subscriber may roll one hour over to the next year up to a total of three hours.

If a subscriber uses more than his six hours in one repair session or uses all of his hours up before his twelve month period has expired he may pay for the remainder of the session at an hourly rate of $70.00 or he may opt to pay the remainder of the outstanding twelve month period's fees and thereby immediately extend his service by six hours and twelve months.

If an unsubscribed client needs service and then wishes to subscribe to my service a fifty percent discount will be given on the initial service up to $100.00, provided the client then subscribes for twelve months of the service at $24.95 a month.

Service is to be calculated at a one hour minimum charge with each subsequent fifteen minute increment being charged as one half hour and each half hour increment being charged as one full hour.

Service is to be provided at the convenience of the subscriber and as the provider's schedule permits.

The service will be an automatically recurring charge to the client's credit card unless the client cancels the service. At the end of a twelve month period the client will automatically receive 6 more hours of computer repair plus one hour from the previous year if one has been unused up to a total of three hours.

A subscriber may cancel the service at any time. At time of cancellation the balance of his subscription must be paid. If he cancels his subscription he still retains the balance of his hours until the twelve months following his initial subscription sign up date.

If a subscriber cancels without notification the subscriber is responsible for any and all fees charged to Bensman Home Computer Repair by the subscriber's credit card company or bank.

This rate does not include costs for parts. Those are to be paid for by the client in addition to the monthly contract fee.

Request to cancel must be provided in writing or via email.

I have read, understand and agree to all of the above.

Google Chrome hacked in Google Chrome hacking contest.
Chrome recently held a contest to see if anyone could use their browser to take over a computer on the internet. Someone could and did and won $60,000. This is why it is very important to be carefull what links you click on.

Linked in can be your link to a virus or spyware.
Linked in and sites like it where you post detailed info about your contacts can get you in trouble. These sites can be accessible by the general public and then bad guys can send email to you pretending to be people in your contact list. These emails can contain toxic payloads.  This is why it is important that you never click on an email attachment or a link in an email unless you know what it is, not just who sent it to you.
