     One of the worst things that can happen to your computer is a crash. Whether due to a virus or a hard drive failure or any other reason a crash is always bad news. How can you make a crash merely inconvenient and not an out and out disaster? Back up your data and know where your recovery software is.
     I have spoken at length on methods for backing up personal data. I will now talk about recovery software. If you have an older computer there is a good chance your manufacturer provided disks with your computer. These disks were probably labeled system disks or recovery disks or system recovery disks. You get the idea. Find them. Get your recovery software and put it right next to your computer and keep it there. That way when your PC crashes you won't have to go through that panicky search trying to find them while you are simultaneously worried about whether your PC can be fixed at all.
     If you have a newer computer or you bought certain brands you will not have any such recovery disks. You will instead have on your computer a program which will allow you to create them. Do this. All you need to get is some DVD-R or DVD+R blank discs, start the program and it will walk you through creating a full set of recovery disks for your PC. You will not be able to do this after your PC crashes. You will have to contact your manufacturer, purchase a set of recovery disks, if available, and wait for them to arrive.

A few minutes spent now could save you days of inconvenience.
