So your computer is too slow to be useful to you, but it still bothers you to throw anything away. Here are so ways to continue the life of your computer. Even if it is not your primary computing device some computers are good candidates for secondary uses. As long as your computer's specs are enough to run the operating system there are options for prolonging the life of your old system. If you are running Windows Vista or Windows seven you need at least two gigabytes of memory and a dual core processor. If you are running Windows Xp you need at least 512 megabytes of ram and a pentium 4 processor. Here are three things that even a relatively old computer can handle.
Mp3 jukebox
Install nothing on the system other than Itunes and fill the computer's hard drive with Mp3 files. You can hook some computers up directly to your Home theatre system's amplifier and viola instant music anytime you want it. If you PC does not a sound card that will let you hook itr up to an amp you can pick up a cheap pair of PC speakers at any big box store. That will enable you to put the computer in any room in your house. You don't need any antivirus software because the computer won't be going on the internet. You don't need any software at except for the operating system and itunes.
Internet device
All you need here is a stable if slow computer. The only software it needs to be able to run is firefox and AVG free antivirus. Either use ethernet cable to connect it directly to your home's router or install a USB wireless adapter and put it anywhere in the house.
Baby's first computer
What doe this computer need to do? Turn on. That's right. The only thing this computer is good for is training a small child in the ways of double clicking, right clicking and dragging and dropping. As long as this computer can turn on and give the user control then it can be an effective teaching tool for a small child. In addition to being able to teach the child about how computers work. you can also use wordpad to teach the ABCs and paint to teach colors and shapes.
Keeping your older computers in service for smaller tasks like this is ecologically sound and can be a lot of fun. In order for an old computer to be able to do any of the above it must be stable. That means it must be able to turn on and stay on and it must respond to commands. This may mean it needs some maintenance.
