Dear fellow traveling families,
China to be the next Quivertree family destination!

We are thrilled to announce that China will be the next Quivertree family destination. This has been planned for a long time, especially since Philip's family visit there in 2007.

China is the quintessential family destination. It has great sights (Great Wall of China, Forbidden City, Terracotta Army in Xian to name a few), amazing food and markets but also an incredible array of different, vivid cultures and peoples. From the bustling cities of Shanghai and Hong Kong to the natural beauty of Yunnan, and the mysteries of Tibet and the 'Roof of the World' Himalayas, China offers anything and everything.

In this month's newsletter we have a report from a family trip to Turkey, Philip's Cuban trip reflections and some more of our popular signs seen around the globe.

Philip's family trip to Cuba - a few reflections

Typical transport

Cuba is like nowhere else we've been. It is an absolutely fascinating country. It is like being transported into a different time period. Between the 1950's USA made cars and the Revolutionary posters and graffitti (plus the challenge of accessing reliable internet) it feels a little like being taken back 40 years. But it has a wonderful atmosphere, incredible beaches and music, and the people are the friendliest I've found anywhere. Also, it is hard to imagine a safer place in which to travel. And by staying in casa particulares (like B&B's in people's houses) and eating in paladores (state approved restaurants in people's houses) one gets an amazingly authentic travel experience.

 Turkey family trip report

  OBrien

Marion recently traveled with Quivertree to Turkey on a multigenerational family trip. Here is her trip report.

Our trip to Turkey with Quivertree was wonderful - definitely exceeded our expectations, which were high to begin with!  There were four of us - Grandmom (me), my son Connor and daughter-in-law Beth, and grandson Rowan, who is 10. Our guide, Edip, and driver, Mr. Kenan, were terrific - competent and knowledgeable, and also patient with my son and me who always wanted to spend more time in every ruin and museum, and with Rowan, who behaved just the way a 10-year-old boy should!

We got to experience aspects of Turkey we never would have found on our own. We enjoyed every aspect of the trip - especially the ruins and museums of ancient treasures, which was why we chose Turkey in the beginning - but also the fantastic food, the wine, the friendly people, the beautiful scenery, the wonders of Cappadocia, and learning about the history of both Western and Eastern cultures.

Our favorite ancient site was Olympos, buried under jungle-like vegetation along the coast - an out-of-the-way spot that was uncrowded and gave you a feeling of personal discovery as pillars and walls arose out of vegetation, invisible one minute and strikingly clear the next. We also especially enjoyed Priene, where Rowan could climb on rocks and ruins and we had our first taste of the wonders to come. All of the ancient sites were terrific - each one has its own ancient history and also its own modern history in terms of how much of the site has been excavated and reconstructed, so that each one has a different personality from the others.

We also enjoyed learning about life in modern Turkey, hearing the lovely and haunting call to prayer, getting a backgammon lesson from some true experts, watching Edip choose the fish that would be cooked especially for  us  for lunch, drinking tea from beautifully shaped glasses. Istanbul is an amazing city - not only its size and diversity, but its stunning monuments and mosques and its meandering back streets.

I could go on and on, but the overall message is simple - Turkey was a wonderful experience and our trip with Quivertree was perfect!  The planning and organization made it relaxing as well as exciting. We'd love to go back!

And finally a few photos that represent the surprises and joys of traveling. First, from Beijing airport, classic Chinese political correctness. Or not quite.
