Gideon's Galapagos reflections

 GalGalapagos

Gideon visited the Galapagos Islands with his daughter Gal (aged 14) in December 2011 and here is his report:

" We were both totally blown away by our experience - it was in one word, magical. I'd go as far as to say that it's the best safari or animal experience that I have ever had, and I've been on safari in Africa and India many times. The Galapagos simply took me by surprise - reading about them or even seeing photos of them was nothing like the actual experience of being there. As far as Gal was concerned, this was the best trip ever, and she just wants to find a way to go back! I didn't really know what to expect - the islands are not famous for their exotic beauty - there are no world-famous beaches, bent palm trees or the like. Rather, they are the leftovers of massive ancient volcanic eruptions, and on many islands the fields of lava stretch forbiddingly into the distance. Of course I knew about Darwin and his famous research, and the fact that species developed on the islands completely independently from the mainland, but nevertheless, none of this prepares you for what you are going to see and experience, which is an adventure with mammals, birds and fish that you simply cannot experience anywhere else.

Following on from my trip, we are now excited to offer Quivertree families incredible family friendly trips to the Galapagos. We offer a range of possibilities: luxury cruises designed especially for families with kids (both younger kids and teens), adventure cruises for families with kids aged 12 and up, and land based trips for families with either very young children (under 8) or for those who simply don't like to spend too long on boats.

Puglia, Italy trip report by Karin and her son Jesse who traveled in December
Alberobello trulli
Karin and Jesse outside a trullo
We had a wonderful trip to the region of Puglia in Italy. The transportation was excellent and all of the folks guiding and helping us were friendly, knowledgeable and just wonderful.

We especially enjoyed staying in our own trullo. It was warm and cozy, and even up to cooking dinner for 3 nights. The one we stayed in was so beautiful, and it was even more interesting architecturally than another one in Alberobello that one had to pay to enter. Mimmo gave us an informational tour that was really fun, and we learned a lot about the town, the history and about the trulli. Our bicycle tours were really wonderful. It was so relaxing to have a guide for the small country roads. Getting to know Sylvia was a highlight because she was so friendly, warm and open. We learned a lot about young people in Italy today from our discussions with her. We had a special visit with our host, Clelia, and her family for our cooking lesson and dinner. It was a treat to spend time with a whole extended Italian family, and the food was outstanding too!
