We enjoyed participating in the Accessibility Summit at McLean Bible Church in April.  Krystle Hedrick, M.Ed., BCBA, and Keely Hersey shared best practice information with those who attended.  Also, Dr. Barbin's panel discussion on "Putting Together the Pieces of the Autism Puzzle." was well received!

Summer ABA Clinic Kick-Off

We're counting down the days until the start of our first Summer ABA Clinic set to begin June 26th.  Due to overwhelming interest, all slots are filled.  Our staff has been working hard to complete the individualized screenings to tailor programs to each child's specific needs.  Lauren Ross, our Master's Level Behavior Analyst and Certified Special Educator is all set with each child's one-on-one program and excited to begin.

Welcome clinic families!   We look forward to a fun and successful summer!
Behavioral Directions staff congratulates Ben on receiving the Spirit of Liberty Award!

Ben
Ben and his family have much to be proud of!  In May, Ben was selected by staff at Liberty Middle School in Chantilly as one of 15 students school-wide  to receive the "Spirit of Liberty" Award. Ben was recognized based on his hard work, upbeat attitude, and excellent citizenship.  School administration said "His positive contributions to the Liberty Middle School community make him an outstanding role model."

Over the past several years, his parents have worked collaboratively with FCPS school teams to form a strong, consistent learning environment for Ben even through his transition to middle school this year.  His parents said "We are so proud of Ben and thankful for Dr. Barbin's support and partnership with his school team over the years.  Although his transition to middle school required a lot of planning and collaboration to get through the bumps, it has resulted in a year of wonderful personal growth for Ben.  Ben is always happy and loves to help out.  He demonstrates patience, uses his calendar to plan activities, and is much more adaptable to changes in his schedule.  We hope that his success will also provide hope to other parents with kids like Ben to make progress on their journey."

"When Ben started his decline at age 2, we were living in Florida.  There was a wonderful family working with Dr. Carbone that reached out to us and helped us along the early intervention path with a Verbal Behavior home-based program.  The problem with that path was we could not afford to sustain our home program and Ben really needed to get out and learn to adapt.  We understand that other parents are faced with similar challenges and need to use public programs, but also need expert support to ensure these programs are timely and effective.  We are fortunate to achieve this balance by partnering with Behavioral Directions staff for IEP development, collaboration, data collection, and so much more.  We know that Ben and our family have more challenges to face, but we know Dr. Barbin has made a great impact working with FCPS for Ben and others in his class and will continue to move Ben forward on his journey."

His teacher, Mr. Christopher Gilbert, and Ms. Shauna Gardziel, ABA Coach, have been very instrumental as well in strong team collaboration with Dr. Barbin and Ben's parents.  They have capitalized on Ben's strengths and kept standards high with an eye on preparation for transitions such as upcoming community outings, changes to the school schedule and assemblies, and preparing for ESY success.  We look forward to watching Ben's success continue!
