Dr. Joan's Life Tip of The Month

Do you experience a sore back despite being slim and fit? The best solution might be found in a yoga class run by a professional instructor. Make sure to screen your yoga teachers as to their approach and only try what makes sense to you - a smaller class or even a private lesson would be worth it to find relief. (Check out this simple new study that indicates the efficacy of yoga-based exercises.)

What is Dr Joan up to?
- The virtual book tour for Sitting Kills, Moving Heals was wonderfully successful. It brought some good reviews and perspectives and also some suggestions on how to make the material even more relevant.
-From September 6-10 I was in Palo Alto, California for two events: the "Yoga Sangam 2012 International Yoga Conference" and the "1st International Workshop on Space Health, Aging, and Yoga Therapy: Metabolic Changes". It was wonderful, exhausting, successful, varied and educational. It began with an interview by Antonio Sati of Yogiviews on Marin TV.  He interviewed me for an hour while I sat cross-legged and immobile for an hour!  Never done that before.  The unfolding and standing up afterwards was the real challenge. Since Marin TV is a local cable station, segments will be posted on YouTube.  Will let you know.  Next was an energizing early morning Yoga class by Dr. Dilip Sarkar at the NASA Research Park.
-"The Space Health, Age and Yoga Therapy: Metabolic Issues" workshop was led off by Stanford gerontologist Dr. Walter Borzt, and wrapped up with excellent discussions with participants from Harvard to Bangalore, India, on evidence that yoga therapy for both space travelers as well as the rest of us on Earth is highly beneficial. Look for my article on this in next month's newsletter.
-The "Yoga: Philosophy, Health, and Research"  was very inspiring and replete with discussion and delicious Indian food. My presentation bridged the modern-day lethal consequence of too much  sitting and the similarities between yoga and using gravity as therapy.
-Upon my return home I spoke on Sitting Kills September 11th, at Hadassah, Chevy Chase, MD.
-On a gorgeous autumn afternoon in Colorado we celebrated my son and his new wife's wedding vows, surrounded by family and friends from all over the US. May the warmth of our wishes, prayers and blessings protect them their entire life together.

Upcoming Events:

-I am speaking at a book reception October 3 in London, England.
