Dear Fellow Alumni,

The alumni office is buzzing as KPUAA staff and volunteers get ready for this Friday's exciting Homecoming Day celebration. As you may or may not know, this year's event is just the second ever of its kind at Kwantlen -- and one we sincerely hope you will help us grow!

Established in 1981, Kwantlen is a relatively "new" post-secondary school in comparison to other academic institutions. In fact, while it now offers more than 120 diverse programs and has graduated more than 35,000 students, it was just three short years ago that it was granted full university status.

Along with this new status came the exciting task of forming an official alumni association. Like at any other major university, the role of our alumni association is to help our graduates maintain a connection with the university, as well as one another. Some of you may wonder why this is important. Well, there are actually many reasons, including the fact that together we are an enormous network. What it really boils down to, however, is the fact that a university and its alumni play an integral role in one another's success. That success, in turn, helps future students and, in fact, our society as a whole.

For example, as skilled, knowledgeable and successful Kwantlen graduates, we are able to have a positive impact on the world around us on a variety of levels. The difference we make as community members and professionals speaks to the high quality of education that we received at Kwantlen, which helps to raise the reputation of the university. That positive reputation not only provides graduates with enhanced career and life opportunities, it enables the university to recruit more students, which contributes to the growth and development of our university's facilities, educational programs and alumni initiatives.

That's a pretty big deal and, believe it or not, showing your support and commitment to your alma mater can be as simple as reading this newsletter, taking advantage of one of our free programs or attending a fun alumni event, such as this Friday's second annual Homecoming Day. Whether you are a very recent graduate or an "early" alum, I really hope to see you there.

Also, I'd again like to welcome our newest members -- the 2011 graduating class! For those of you who haven't yet had the chance, be sure to have a look around the alumni website and check out our Tools for Success program. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about our programs, please call us at 604-599-2010. Looking forward to seeing everyone Homecoming Day -- Go Eagles!

Sincerely,

Kristan Signature

Discovering the Benefits of Volunteering

How "Giving Back" Contributes to Your Personal Development and Employability

We all know getting involved in our community and giving back through volunteering feels great and, more importantly, helps to further the success of important causes and initiatives that make a difference in other people's lives.

However, in addition to its enormous 'feel-good' philanthropic value, according to Vanessa Harris, Volunteer Development Manager at England's University of Leicester, it also offers a plethora of practical benefits that can greatly contribute to one's personal development and employability. What every new grad should know

By Nicholas Pavlich, KPUAA Director

Well, Jerry Seinfeld had one: a comedic protégé named Kenneth Bania. "I'm gonna mentor this kid to the top," Jerry vowed. His "work-shy" sidekick, George Costanza, had one too. On the hilarious topic of risk management, he said: "Why don't you read this book on risk management and let's see if you can explain it to me."

In all seriousness, today -- more than ever before -- it's not just a university education and high marks that get you a job. In fact, even past work experience is often not enough to land a plumb position in this competitive job environment. More>>>
